With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Wilfred Ehigie Omosigho Otote, our
beloved father, who was known to many as "Freddy the African." Surrounded by family
as he left this world, but his spirit remains-a true testament to a life lived with passion
and joy. He was a creator, an artist who saw beauty in every corner of the world, and a
man whose laughter was a melody to those who loved him..
Born in Benin City of Edo State, Nigeria, Freddy brought his vibrant spirit to Florida
over 50 years ago, where he became a cherished figure in the city of St. Augustine. A
gifted painter and artist for more than four decades, Freddy's work graces homes,
businesses, and historic buildings throughout the city. His brushstrokes told stories, and
his presence brought joy to everyone he met-from neighbors and shopkeepers to
tourists and lifelong friends.
Freddy was a beloved character, known for his humor and sage advice. He had a way
of making everyone feel like the most important person in the room and was truly the life
of any party he stepped into. He was diligent about staying in touch, regularly calling
friends and family just to see how they were doing. His warmth and connection also
bridged oceans, as he worked hard to maintain close ties with his family abroad,
ensuring they always felt connected and cared for. Freddy never forgot his roots and
held his home and family in his heart with immense pride.
He is survived by his three devoted daughters, I'sha Omosigho, Uyigue Omosigho,
and Tiya Omosigho. His six beloved grandchildren, Martin Omosigho
Cunningham, Robyn Perry, Aaliyah Omosigho, Malaya Martin, Zariah
Martin and Niomi Omosigho Jackson and one precious great-grandchild Zenobia
Omosigho all residing in Columbus, Ohio. Freddy also leaves behind one surviving
sister Ezebuwa Omosigho in Edo, Nigeria, along with a vast extended family
of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, and aunties across the globe who will forever
cherish his memory.
Forever in our hearts, Freddy. Your colors will never fade.
