CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY: DEACON WILLIAM HENRY BAKER JR. We will ALL miss starting the day with his morning texts of good news from our Lord thy God
William "Chunky" Henry Baker Jr., an extraordinary man of faith, love, and laughter, left this world on March 9, 2025, at the age of 84, in
Buffalo, New York. Born on October 12, 1940, in Coalwood, West Virginia. Bill fashioned a vibrant tapestry of love, humor, and devotion, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished forever. Living most recently in
Buffalo, New York, he remained woven into the community's fabric-a generous and steadfast pillar. Bill's life was a testament to service, devotion, and unyielding spirit. A proud Naval Chief Petty Officer, Bill honored his country with 26 years of dedicated service, sharing his skill and courage aboard the historic naval aircraft carrier the USS Saratoga CV 60. Throughout his distinguished career, where his steadfast dedication earned him numerous commendations and prestigious honors, such as five Good Conduct Medals, our nation's badge for unwavering service, a Navy Achievement Medal, Naval Expeditionary Medal and National Defense Service Medal. As well as an Expert Rifle Ribbon, embodying his commitment to excellence and perseverance. This Navy stalwart was as much a guardian of his nation as he was a shepherd within his beloved church, God's Temple of Grace, Inc. Religiously devoted, he was firmly rooted in his church, where his infectious laughter and heartwarming tales added light to many Sundays. His greatest act of service might have been as Deacon Baker, he poured his heart into his duties-even amid the challenges of a worldwide pandemic. After voluntarily stepping down as lead Deacon in 2022, he never truly left his community, continuing to serve through teaching Sunday School and preserving the church's well-being alongside his dear friend, Deacon Brooks.
Bill's personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. His journey with love began with Erline and graced him with a son, Jimmy. Tragically, Jimmy passed on January 20, 2021, a sorrow Bill bore with grace and resilience. Despite the heartache of their passing, Bill's laughter never dimmed, finding joy with Jessie as they explored America's landscapes. Together with their daughter, Kimberly, they created cherished memories among Texas' plains and Florida's beaches. Their travels, filled with laughter and awe, were the highlight of Bill's life. A marriage of 36 years, Bill was a devoted, generous, loving husband to Jessie as Texas and Florida became cherished chapters in their story. So did the rose garden he and Jessie tended-a yearly bloom that became a poignant symbol of enduring love after her passing. His garden became a beacon of beauty in his neighborhood, a reflection of the generous spirit he embodied. Later in life, Bill found companionship once more with Maxine Amerson, who stood by him in love, sharing a seven year marriage and cherished moments until she passed at the beginning of 2025.
Throughout all of life's trials and joys, Bill was ever the devoted father, grandfather, brother, and neighbor. Although preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Cornelia, and his sisters Sharion and Gwendolyn, his spirit of love and laughter continues to flourish through those he's touched. Bill leaves behind a family bound by his love and legacy, including his daughters Kimberly Simms and Angelia (Bobby) Huntley, sons Robert (Kim) and John Frazier, beloved sister Jacquelyn Gunn, brother Pernell (Gloria) Baker, and countless cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family, and friends. A very special relationship and bond with his cousins Melvinia Baker, Yvonne Young, and Stephanie Boyd kept Chunky's memories alive in his last days of West Virginia his pet goat, running to his grandma Celia Pratcher house to avoid discipline, and walking around with his bottle. Fond memories of his childhood. He also leaves his only living Aunt Aunt Mary Pratcher, may God continue to Bless her and keep her well. Bill's was a life led by love, faith, and a generous spirit. He was always ready to crack a good joke, revel in a Buffalo Bills football game, talk about current political affairs, or savor hearty meals surrounded by family. Bill will be laid to rest at St. Matthew's Cemetery Field of Valor, with military honors beside his beloved Jessie, where roses are sure to bloom. Their shared journeys now stilled, yet forever echoing in the bloom of roses. In his steadfast way, Bill was ever only a heartbeat away from both strength and tenderness, and now, in God's grace, he continues to inspire hearts, in everlasting peace.
