William Andrew Barr, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024. Born on March 11, 1940, in Fort Worth, Andrew was the ultimate gentleman, steadfast in his dedication to his family and community, and genuinely interested in others.
The eldest son of James Willard and Christyne Lackey Barr, Andrew graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1958 and received an undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1964. He graduated from the UT School of Law in 1966. After briefly practicing law in Fort Worth, Andrew was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney in Dallas where he served from 1967 to 1973. Subsequently, he had a successful career as a corporate litigation partner at Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely and its successors. Andrew was admired as an attorney with exacting attention to detail and impeccable integrity. He was a member of the State Bar of Texas, the American Bar Association and the Dallas Bar Association.
Andrew served the Town of Highland Park from 2002 to 2014 in various capacities. He held the position of Chairman of the Zoning Commission from 2004 to 2008 and was a Town Council Member from 2008 to 2014. He played an influential role in the 2014 renovation of the Highland Park Town Hall building.
Few things gave Andrew more pleasure than watching his children compete in high school and college sports. In his free time, Andrew enjoyed attending Highland Park High School football games, watching his grandchildren excel in their many endeavors, working on various woodworking and home improvement projects, and admiring antique cars. He attended Highland Park United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he was a member of the Discovery Sunday School Class.
Andrew is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Rummell Barr of Dallas, and their children, Willard Andrew Barr (Meg) of Charlotte, North Carolina and Meredyth Barr Haller (Chris) of Fort Worth. Andrew loved his four grandchildren, Margaret Tanner Barr, Meredyth Christyne Barr, William Baird Haller and Owen Thomas Haller. He is also survived by two brothers, Kenneth Barr and Allan Barr (Ann), both of Fort Worth. We will miss his clever wit, his firm handshake and his red pen.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 14 at 1:00 PM at Highland Park United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors following the service in Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Senior Source in Dallas or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
