William Bennie Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCrery & Harra Funeral Home and Crematory - Concord Pike on Jan. 22, 2026.
William Joseph Bennie, 75, of Hockessin, Delaware, formerly of Scranton, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 21, 2026.

Bill was, above all else, a family man-strong, passionate, and gentle. Whether gathered for holidays, milestones, family reunions, pool parties or an ordinary Sunday afternoon, he found his greatest joy in being surrounded by the family he loved. His devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren was the defining thread of his life.

He spent 42 years with Frito-Lay in sales, building relationships across NEPA with the same warmth he brought to everything he did. He was also a tax accountant, a business he took over from his Uncle Ken, and was known for going the extra mile-often literally-to deliver personalized service to his clients. His work ethic was unrivaled.

Bill was a devoted fan of the New York Giants, Boston Celtics, and New York Yankees, and a reluctant Phillies fan upon his retirement to Delaware. He treasured the games he attended over the years with his children-though he would be the first to tell you it was never really about the score or who played. It was about the company.

In quieter moments, Bill could be found on the porch with Donna, listening to jazz, blues, or classic rock. He had a love for old movies and would stay up into the wee hours watching black-and-white films. Bill was a student of world history and devoted to his pets. He inherited a spirit of adventure from his parents, Peg and Clint. When his children were young, his family of 7 would squeeze into one vehicle for camping vacations in New Jersey or Upstate New York. Later in life, he preferred more exotic destinations, and loved nothing more than cruising with Donna, Mary Ellen, and Joe.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret 'Peg' and Clinton Bennie.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Lee Bennie; their children, Andrea Abban (Andrew), Robert F. McDonough, Meghan McDonough (Robert), Craig M. Bennie (Palma), and Bryan D. Bennie (Lindsey); his seven grandchildren, Kyle, Olivia, Autumn, Lincoln, Taylor, Sydney, and Anna; and his sisters, Mary Ellen Stezar and Margaret Kelly.

A celebration of life will be held in May.

I would first like to pay my deepest respects to Bill´s family and offer my sincere condolences. Bill was my accountant for about ten years, but he became so much more than that. From the very beginning, he believed in us and helped guide us as we started our restaurant business in Pennsylvania, but what I will always remember is that no matter where he lived, he never stopped taking care of us.

When we eventually moved to Florida, Bill continued to support us as if nothing had changed. Even though we were no longer face to face, we spoke often on the phone, and I will truly miss hearing his voice.

Bill was such a positive light. Every time he came into the deli, he brought warmth, kindness, and a smile. He had an incredible personality and loved to talk about anything. He did all of our taxes, multiple businesses in multiple states, gave thoughtful advice, and even took over my balance sheet - something I was never good at. I know he probably chuckled (and maybe sighed) when he received my color-coded, highlighter-covered paperwork, but he always handled everything with patience, grace, and care.

Bill was a genuinely good man with a beautiful heart. I am so grateful to have known him. He made a lasting impact on our lives, and he will be deeply missed. I already miss him so much.

Steve, Rich and I are so very sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I always enjoyed chatting with him whenever he called to discuss my taxes. I always loved comparing the weather between PA and DE and he was happy to talk about it.
We discussed changes we were making at the farm and how our folks would feel if they were here.
We all appreciated how he continued to serve our needs, especially after moving to Delaware.
We especially appreciated his friendship. We admired, respected and loved him. He's greatly missed already.
May God bless and comfort you all.
