Cress Funeral & Cremation Service - Madison WestWilliam “Bill” Berkan
William “Bill” Berkan lived a life defined by compassion, humility, and a deep devotion to helping the weak grow strong. He passed away surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy of service, faith, and quiet strength that touched everyone who knew him.
Bill was born and raised in Wisconsin and dedicated his entire professional life to serving the people of his home state. He began his career at Central Wisconsin Center (formerly Central Colony), later working with the Department of Social Services and ultimately the Department of Public Instruction, from which he retired. He was an active member of the NASW (National Association of Social Workers) and a child welfare consultant. His work in social services was not just a career but a calling - one that reflected his belief in dignity, opportunity, and care for all.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where he earned his master’s degree in social work. His education shaped a lifelong commitment to helping others grow, heal, and thrive.
Bill married the love of his life, Ruth Ann Gabrielson, and together they shared 65 years of partnership, purpose, and joy. Their marriage was a model of mutual support and shared mission. Together they founded LUAD (Lutherans United Assisting After Disasters), and they were among the first to attend Grandparents University at UW - Madison - an experience they cherished.
Community involvement was woven into every chapter of Bill’s life. He was an active supporter of the Diligent Doers H Club and the Cap City Water Ski Club, always finding ways to support youth, families, and community connection. His faith was central to who he was. Bill taught Sunday School, participated in mentoring groups, and completed the Bethel Series - an experience that shaped his spiritual life and inspired him to guide others through it as well. He also served on the management team of the Bethel Food Pantry, where his steady leadership and generous heart helped feed countless families.
Bill lived a life of impact - quiet, steady, and profound. Whether through his work, his church, his community, or the simple kindness he offered to every person he met, he made the world gentler and stronger. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, the communities he strengthened, and the family he loved so deeply.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann, daughters Theresa and Laura (Roger) and son William Berkan Jr. (Olympia), grandchildren Kailey and Casey (Rachel) and great grandchild (Ingrid) as well as by all who were blessed to know him.
A Celebration of Life for Bill will be held on Saturday, April 18, at Bethel Lutheran Church (312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, WI) from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Parking is available both onsite and in the State Street Capitol Ramp. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided.
