William “Bill” Henry Murphy, aged 84, passed away peacefully on December 4th, 2024.
Born on October 14th, 1940, in San Francisco, California, Bill carried his love for his hometown with him throughout his life. Though he spent the last 50 years in the Midwest, including the past 20 years in Indianapolis, his heart often returned to San Francisco. He cherished visiting the city, surrounded himself with mementos of its charm, and never lost his fondness for sourdough bread, salami, crab Louies, and the 49ers. But he also was a Colts fan!
Bill graduated from Cogswell Tech with an aptitude in mechanics. Early in his career, he excelled in computer hardware before transitioning to roles that showcased his skills as a project manager. He played an important role in the adoption of computer technology for organizations such as Honeywell, GMAC, and EDS. One of his final major achievements was leading a project that utilized satellite positioning systems to track vehicle locations, a technology taken for granted today but was cutting edge when Bill worked in it.
A lifelong passion of Bill’s was his 1960 Austin Healey Sprite, which he purchased as a young man and treasured throughout his life.
Bill’s family will forever remember his kindness, patience, quiet leadership, and self-deprecating sense of humor. As a provider, he created a foundation of financial and emotional stability that allowed his family to flourish.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Murphy; his sister, Kathleen Beatty; his four children, Jennifer Murphy, Darlene Groves, Casey Murphy, and John Lutz; and his grandchildren, Fiona and Annabelle Brauer, Allison and Bradley Groves, and Liam, Aiden, and Kai Murphy.
Bill’s memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, from 10AM-11AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fishers, IN. A funeral mass will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11AM.
