William was born in Elgin, Texas, to Noble and Nettie Virgie (Hill) Murphy on February 21, 1939. He graduated from Hale Center High School in Hale Center, Texas. After attending one semester at Lubbock Christian University, William decided college wasn't for him and joined the U.S. Navy where he proudly served and specialized in aviation electronics. Over his lifetime, he worked as an electrician, instrument tech, and analyzer technician working in refineries and chemical plants. His career spanned more than 50 years, finally retiring at the age of 79. William was a man of many talents such as carpentry, electrical, and plumbing. He loved working with his hands.
William found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved his family and his friends. He considered it an honor to be called Taylor and Leland Grunden's “Opa” whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed music, fishing, and riding on his tractor at the farm, a place he loved.
William was preceded in death by his parents, Noble and Nettie Virgie Murphy; along with his sister, Lois Lynn Stone.
William is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Lucy Lynn Murphy; his two brothers, Client Murphy and family and Kennith Murphy and family; his sister-in-law, Cynthia Shaver; his niece, Jeana Grunden and husband Adrian Grunden and their children Taylor and Leland Grunden; nephew Dustin Shaver, niece Molly Zutnick and family, niece Jamie Kaatz and family and niece Debbie Hidalgo and family.
