Yadkinville - William Gilbert Brown, 83, passed away on February 28th, 2025. He was born May 27th, 1941 in Yadkin County, NC to the late Samuel Brown and Ima Southard Brown. Gilbert served in the U.S. Navy, serving four years on the USS Comstock. After serving his time in the navy he furthered his career where he served thirty years in the department of corrections. Twelve of the years as superintendent over the Yadkin County prison. During his employment, he and a fellow coworker established a school in Dobson, NC within the prison to provide inmates with educational opportunities. He was a member of the Freemasonry organization Lodge 162, serving as a past master. Gilbert served as the president of the Elkin/Jonesville Shrine club. Also, a member of the Eastern Star chapter #233. All who knew Gilbert know how caring, strong, and outgoing he was. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by father-in-law, JP Shore; mother-in-law, Annie Shore; brother-in-law, Tony Watson; nephew, Bobby Runyan. Gilbert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret Shore Brown; sons, Robert Keith Brown, Billy Dale Brown (Ann), and Jason Sanford Brown; Grandchildren, Kayla Nicole Brown, Candice Ann Shore (Zane), Lauren Elizabeth Brown, and Hannah LeeAnn Brown; Great-Grandchildren, Brock Deen Lashley, Kaiden Isaiah Brown, Alexia Jayde Taylor, Landon Reid Brown, Emerson Marie Shore, Emilia Ann Shore, MacKenna Belle Jarrett, Ellie Reese Wood; Sister, Ethylene Watson; Niece, Tammy Watson VanHoy; Sister and Brother in Law, Robin (Fred) Cooper and Johnnie Shore.
A funeral service for Gilbert will be held 2:00 PM Friday, March 7, 2025 at Gentry Funeral Chapel in Yadkinville with Pastor Will Hamric officiating. Burial will follow at Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamptonville with full military honors by the Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Friday at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
In Gilbert's memory donations can be made to Shriners Children's organization for his many years serving as a Shriner.
