Butch was an avid hunter and fisherman, in his words, “a turkey slayer from way back.” He was always joking and playing around. He was a true joy to be around, “sometimes”. His family and friends brought him the most joy, especially when making plans to teach his grandson, Hudson, how to hunt and fish like him.
Butch is survived by his children, Erin Cole (Clayton) of Martinsville, Virginia, William “Trey” Lanigan, III of Martinsville, Virginia; step children, Julianna Sands of Martinsville, Virginia, Blake Sands of Martinsville, Virginia, Blake Smith of Eden, North Carolina; a grandson, Hudson Luke Cole; brother, Jesse Dale Jones (Jennifer) of Bassett, Virginia; sister, Shannon Marie Shough (Dean) of Bassett, Virginia; loving life partner, Melissa Reid “Mawmaw” of Martinsville, Virginia; special friends and family, Walter McBride, Glen McBride, Pierre Hairston, Lee Moore, Mountain Man, Ronnie Trantham, Donnie Trantham and Travis Walthall; the mother of his children, Tisha Lanigan of Eden, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
