William C. Campbell

William Corbett Campbell, 83, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at his residence in Staunton.

He was born on April 21, 1941, in Clifton Forge to the late Walter Kemper, Sr. and Martha Virginia Scruggs Campbell.

A longtime resident of Staunton, Virginia, William dedicated his life to both public service and his faith.

William's career in law enforcement began at the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, where he made significant contributions over the years, starting as a patrol officer and ultimately retiring as a detective. His dedication led him to become the first DARE officer for Augusta County, exemplifying his commitment to youth and education. He further served as a U.S. Marshal, demonstrating his dedication to ensuring public safety. Following his retirement from law enforcement, he continued to serve his community as a courier at Community Bank.

His commitment to service extended beyond his professional life; he was a devoted member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church in Staunton, where he actively engaged in various roles within the church. He served as Head Usher, Church Trustee, and was part of the Leadership Team. In addition, his participation in the New Life Sunday School class reflected his commitment and fellowship within the church.

Outside of his profound involvement in his community and his church activities, William was a proud member of the Staunton Lodge #13 AF&AM. He also served on the board for the Valley Mission and the Salvation Army. Additionally, he was a board member of the Augusta County Federal Credit Union.

His accomplishments didn’t stop there, he was also recognized on the sports field, as he was honored as a 1958 Clifton Forge High School All-American in football. However, his proudest accomplishments were found in his roles as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, where his love and dedication truly shone through.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanetta Evelyn McAllister Campbell; his daughter, Cindy Campbell Lowe; his brother, Walter Kemper Campbell, Jr. and his wife, Sharon; his grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Cummings, Jonathan William Cummings, and his wife, Hannah, and Emily Virginia Calhoun, and her husband, Skyler; his great grandchildren, Addison, Leland, Finley, Pip, Cora, Amy Belle, Evelyn, and Evangeline; his sister-in-law, Sharon Zaccaria; his nieces, Kristina Zaccaria, Cathy Denby, Beth Ann Robins, and Holland Campbell; his nephews, Domenic and Davis Zaccaria, and numerous cousins.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Edward Preston Campbell; and his sister, Sarah Virginia Campbell McCray.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Saint Paul’s Church in Staunton.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Saint Paul’s Church in Staunton with Reverend Ryan Oswald officiating.
