William Campbell Obituary

Published by Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors Inc on Feb. 24, 2018.
Major William (Bill) T Campbell, 71, passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, 2018 after a courageous battle with metastatic renal cancer. He was born to James J Campbell and Frances R Moles Campbell Jan. 5, 1947 in Logansport, IN. He is preceded in death by his parents. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marilee Nickelson, children Chad Campbell, Allison Campbell, Anna (Jeff) Greenwood, Katie Nickelson, and Molly (Nick) Maestas, as well as grandchildren Kendi (Alex) Swearingen, Taylor and Hannah Campbell, Logann and Connor Crull, Ella and Carson Greenwood, Brock and Tatum Maestas, brother Robert (Gwen) Campbell, sister Cheryl (Chris) Guilonard, as well as all who knew and loved him. Showing his true love of our country and patriotic side, Bill joined the US Naval Reserves in 1965. He then joined the US Army in June 1966 and was commissioned in April 1967 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served in Vietnam in 1969 as an artillery officer where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Hawaii was his next a liaison to deactivate the 9th infantry division. He chose not to go back to Vietnam, joined the Colorado National Guard, and then continued his service to our country in the Individual Ready Reserves. He achieved the rank of Major in the US Army. An avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, or anything outdoors, Bill leaves a legacy of that love with his children and grandchildren. He loved to work in the garden, taking great pride in keeping the yard and flowers looking wonderful. Another hobby of Bill’s was photography. He seemed to always have his camera with him, and with his artistic eye enjoyed taking photos of his family, scenery, and his dogs. Bill had a long line of Labrador Retrievers, and when he was younger was active in field trials with his dogs and the field trial community. When he was five years old Bill moved to Colorado and made Pueblo his life-long home. He went to Washington Elementary School, Corwin Middle School, South High School, and Southern Colorado State College. He still has many close friends he met at school. Bill married his high school sweetheart, Susanne Klune, and they had two children, Chad and Allison. That marriage later ended in divorce. Later, Bill remarried and started a new life with his current wife, Marilee Nickelson. He inherited three more daughters, and together with Marilee he has nine grandchildren who were the light of his life! Bill joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 2001 and embraced a new spiritual side of his life. He has a strong testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ, and our Heavenly Father. He served in the bishopric of the Mesa Ward for several years and has a deep and abiding faith in the resurrection and eternal life, and of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Bill retired from King Soopers after a long career, where he has wonderful memories and long-term friends. We are grateful for the many prayers on behalf of Bill and his family while he fought a long, hard battle with cancer. Your prayers have lifted and sustained us during this difficult time. Also, we are grateful for the many health care providers who helped care for him at the very end. Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4720 Surfwood Lane, Pueblo, CO 81005. Military honors. Bill was a friendly classmate. He was the same 50 years later. Semper Fideles, sir. See you in the ethereal hereafter.
