William Charpentier Obituary

William A Charpentier

Nov. 12, 1944 - April 23, 2023

LAS CRUCES, NM - William A Charpentier, known as Bill Bob to friends and his grandchildren as Bubba, passed away April 23, 2023 in Las Cruces, NM.

Born in Whitehall, NY to Erwin and Margaret, he would admit to being proud of his family, proud of his 38 years at GE, and proud of a work ethic he passed on to his children.

In leisure time he could be found sharing a beer or two with buddies, at a favorite pub. Cheering much too loudly at his son's football games or daughter's swim meets, singing to the 50s in his off-key voice, playing memorable Santa Claus for all the family children and anyone who dropped by on Christmas Eve, or passionately supporting the NY Giants, but threatening to burn every item of team regalia he owned when disappointed.

It was thought, only dynamite would get him out of NY, but in 2009 he agreed to move West for a drier climate. He never again wore long pants, whipped up inferno salsa, roasted stuffed jalapenos, raised turtles and considered adopting a donkey.

Once he conquered the cellphone, he relished cyber-sparring with his brothers over weather, sports and politics.

Asked how he met his wife, "I was dancing on a table in a Montana night club and she couldn't ignore me". They loved and challenged each other for 57 years.

He deeply regretted his sisters: Cheryl and Donna and son-in-law, Tom having to leave the family far too early.

He will be missed by his wife Jeanne; son, Daryl and wife Leah; daughter Rene; grandsons: Kye and Kellan; step-grandchildren: Trey, Stratton, Colin and Leanna; brothers: Dana (Cynthia) and Jeff (Rose); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family in NM and MT and many friends. His life will be celebrated in NY at a later date.

A year ago we said we would not forget him and just yesterday Susan and I shared some fond memories of him. Any one of us would be so lucky to have touched somebody else in a positive way in the manner that Big Bill has touched us. Why 'Big Bill'? The week we met him we also met another man named Bill and given that this Bill was much larger in girth he got that moniker. As time went by he earned it for his giant spirit and impact he made upon us and many others he touched.

Jeanne, Daryl & Rene, My Heartfelt sorrow for the loss of your husband and father. We have been separated for years and many miles, but my love from childhood/young adult life memories for Bill and your family keeps us close. I will never forget all of our great times together, especially on Christmas. Bill played every game Santa brought us-from ping pong, bowling, bumper pool, rock em sock em robots, foosball, battling tops, and his favorite first ever boxing video game. Bill, dad and I played that boxing game all night. I was 12 at the time and I beat Bill around the first 25 times I played him....but he was determined to beat me and kept coming back...only to start dominating me. He then noticed that I was not taking the losses very well and suddenly I was winning again. Bill was the best ever-love him so much!!! My Mom once asked me if something ever happened to them who would I want to raise me. Without hesitation I said Bill and Jeanne of course. Love, Jeff "Ned the Head" Reed

Bill was great guy. He was a good friend to the Reed family. Everyone enjoyed his sense of humor and great laugh. I´ll always remember working with him on his Saturday morning delivery route for Hogan´s dairy. Bill´s warmth and caring will always be remembered.

Bill was a great chauffeur taking a sister-in-law around in New Mexico during that Covid year. Memories now, stories and best moments for all who spent time with him. Warm thoughts to those closest to Bill, especially my dear sister, Jeanne.

Big Bill he was to us! One of the first people we met when we were moving to Las Cruces. It was on the golf course, and I immediately recognized that New York swagger. I told him I was a Packer fan and he still accepted me. His wit was always on display, (ask J.C. Jeanne) but it was overshadowed by his generosity. He was a good soul - a man worth knowing! A man we shall surely miss but not forget.

I don´t have one memory of Bill that doesn´t include laughing and good times. I still have the purple "Rabby" that Bill gave me when I was around 2. A couple of years ago when Jeanne and Bill came for a visit, I showed it to him and he about fell over. That worn out stuffed bunny was, and still is, my favorite.

We are so grateful that Bill headed West. All of our get-togethers the past several years have provided many memories that we will always treasure. He truly was one of a kind. All our love to those who mourn for the loss of Bill.

Oh the memories! All the way back to the Glasgow Air Base days, helping dad with harvest in Poplar and trips we made to NY.
We are so grateful you headed west so we had more opportunities to spend time with you. We relish the New Mexico memories. Golf, chili pepper adventures, turtles, ear cones and Uncle George stories that had us laughing until we cried. Bill saved the best for last....the notion of getting a donkey. What ongoing fun we had with that one! We will always cherish our time together. The laughter, the hugs and kisses and memories planted deep within us. Rest well, Bill. Thank you for the love and laughter.

Bill brought us so much joy and laughter, expressed in his great love and enthusiasm for life!
We will miss his salsa and his gifts of Pecos melons and Mesilla Valley pecans. Bill holds a special place in our hearts, and on our ofrenda.

My sincere condolences to the Charpentier family . I may have been too young to remember him in his Whitehall days, where I grew up . But then I met his daughter Rene and we have become close friends and neighbors . His legacy in athletics for my hometown is stellar . With Fondness , Laurie Jillson Golding , Watervliet, NY
