William Patrick Darmody

William Patrick Darmody, affectionately known as Pat, "Coach D," or Pop Pop, passed away peacefully at home on March 12, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, he leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication that will be cherished for generations to come.
Born on September 30, 1934, in Washington, D.C., Pat was the eldest of two siblings. He moved frequently during his childhood before proudly serving in the U.S. Army in 1956. After his military service, he met and married the love of his life, Louise Johnson, in 1959. Together, they built a life full of love and family, welcoming their three children-Colleen, Kevin, and Janeen-who became the center of his world.
Pat and Louise settled in their beloved home on Heming Avenue in Springfield, Virginia, where he found his greatest joy in raising his children and later, playing an integral role in the lives of his 9 grandchildren. Whether coaching, refereeing basketball, or cheering from the sidelines, he was a constant, supportive presence at every game, match, and event. His passion for sports extended beyond his own family, as he was deeply involved in the basketball program at O'Connell High School for many years.
A hardworking and loyal provider, Pat dedicated 30 years to the same company while also driving a school bus to support his family. Following Louise's early passing, he honored her memory by purchasing a beach house in Surfside Beach, a place where his family could gather, make memories, and continue the tradition of love and togetherness she had fostered.
Pat is survived by his children, Colleen, Kevin (Karen), and Janeen (Kevin) along with many cherished grandchildren and extended family members. His warmth, humor, and unwavering devotion to his family and community will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 17, 2025, at 12 noon at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, followed by internment at Fairfax Memorial. The family welcomes you to share your memories of Pop Pop at fairfaxmemorialfuneralhome.com.
