"Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity."
After a lengthy illness and with family beside him, Retired Capt. William "Bill" Carl Dixon, Jr., age 95, used the "golden key" and entered that palace of eternity on November 17, 2025.
William was the son of the late W. Carl Dixon, Sr. and Mary L. Dixon. He was born in the Avondale area of Chattanooga. He had a passion for softball that began in Hardy Jr. High and Central High School, and continued as a big part of his life. There were so many hours spent at the ball parks. He played for many church and company teams, most of them championship teams.
William was proud to have served time in the U.S. Marine Corps. Many stories were told to the family about those days.
Capt. Dixon served 32 years in the Chattanooga Police Dept, spending 10 of those years in the Homicide Division. When he went back into uniform, he was proud he had no "unsolved cases" from those 10 years. He formed many great long-term friendships during that time on the force.
Bill was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and enjoyed serving as a greeter. He'd been a member of Central Baptist Church (Woodmore) previously.
He loved target shooting. He came in 2nd place in the TN STATE MARKSMAN competition and was very proud of that plaque. Golf was another hobby, he earned 3 "hole-in-one" trophies. He also loved to fish, and enjoyed several fishing trips to the gulf with some of his police buddies.
Family was extremely important to Bill. Sunday after church, there would be picnics on the lake, or on the mountain. Before returning home, a trip for an ice cream was a must. As grandchildren came, he loved teaching them to ride a bicycle, how to shoot hickory nuts off the tree with their BB guns, and how to fish off the dock.
Bill had a love for little dogs, and had one beginning from his childhood and throughout his life until the last few years.
Capt. Dixon was preceded in death by his father, W. Carl Dixon, Sr. (30-year CFD retiree); mother, Mary Lutz Dixon; brother, Dr. Rev. Robert E. Dixon of Dallas, TX, and son-in-law, J.L. "Bobby" Armstrong of Decatur, TN.
He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Sybil Taylor Dixon; sons, William Carl Dixon III (Gayle) and Robert Taylor Dixon (Susan); daughter, Karen D. Armstrong; grandchildren, Tori Hall (Brandon), Mandy Emery, Zachary Dixon (Haley), Bill Dixon (Amber); great-grandchildren, Briggs Hall, Olivia Hall, Will Dixon, Thomas Dixon, Lucas Dixon, as well as Aubrey Emery and Greyson Emery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 22, 2025 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. with Pastor Doug Plumlee officiating.
Bill will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers are grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Brandon Hall, Bill Dixon, Zachary Dixon, Greyson Emery, Will Dixon, Thomas Dixon and honorary pallbearer, Lucas Dixon.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Ridgedale Baptist Church (Benevolent Fund), the
Cancer Society, or the
Alzheimer's Association.
We the family cannot begin to express our deepest "Thank You" to so many family, friends, neighbors and caretakers who have walked with us on this long journey. May God bless each and every one of you for all the prayers and expressions of love and care that you have extended to us.
