William Dycus Obituary

William Darryl "Bill" Dycus

September 27, 1941 - July 28, 2024

Lee's Summit, Missouri - William "Bill" Dycus, 82, of Lee's Summit, MO, died July 28th, 2024. Bill was born in Galena, MO on September 27, 1941. He grew up in Kansas City, MO and graduated from Paseo High School. He obtained a Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration in 1973 and a Masters of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration in 1977. Bill joined the KCMO Police Dept in 1960 at the age of 19, as a Police Tow Truck Driver. When he was 21, he joined the Police Academy and became a Patrolman. Bill was a member of KCPD's first Helicopter Unit in 1967. He later served in the Personnel Division, then as a Sergeant in the Metro Patrol, Internal Affairs and Crimes vs Property Divisions. In 1976 at the rank of Captain, he was Watch Commander of the North Patrol Division. Bill earned the rank of Major in 1985 and helped create the first automated fingerprint system. He retired in 1989 after 26 years of service. Bill maintained close relationships with the Police officers he served with throughout the rest of his life. Bill met his wife Nancy on a blind date in 1963 and they were married on June 27, 1964. Bill and Nancy were together for 60 years until her death in January 2024. They shared wonderful dinners with the "Square Bunch", played cards with other police retirees, and occasionally swapped stories over a fine bourbon. Bill enjoyed cooking and often tried out new recipes on friends and family. They doted on their children and loved their grandkids unconditionally. Bill is survived by his son Sean Dycus (Lees Summit, Mo) and Kim (Marlin) Mangels (Pullman, WA), along with grandchildren Shannon Dycus, Ryan Dycus, Carson Mangels and Alison Mangels. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Nancy Dycus and his parents, William and Ova Dycus. A visitation will be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055 on Tuesday, August 6th, 2024. The family will greet guests between the hours of 9:30am - 11:00am. Burial will follow visitation and begin at 11:30am and he will be alongside Nancy in the Lee's Summit Historical Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggest donations to be made in Bills honor to National Kidney Association. Online condolences can be made at www.speakschapel.com

William (Bill) Dycus & Nancy Dycus
Thirty years ago, my wife Pauline and I travelled from England to attend my professional society´s annual conference in San Antonio, Texas. Fortuitously, Pauline met Nancy Dycus during the opening ceremony of the conference, and they became instant friends. Later, during the proceedings, I was introduced to Nancy and Bill, and we knew from that moment on that they would become most valued and steadfast friends. We had a great time in San Antonio, and upon our return to England, a pen-pal relationship began between us.
I discovered that Bill had a gentle sense of humour that bridged any cultural differences. He and Nancy were fun to be in contact with and were eager to learn about English customs and traditions, just as we were interested in American traditions.
We met up again with Nancy and Bill in Las Vegas, along with their daughter Kim, a couple of years later, where we enjoyed many adventures filled with fun and laughter.
Not long after that visit, Nancy and Bill came to England. We had a fantastic week, with each day offering new adventures. Knowing Bill´s interest in history, we visited different English castles every day, alongside trips to pubs, theatres, stately homes, Windsor, and Central London. Bill even had the chance to drive a military tank on training grounds. It was such a pleasure to host them, and Pauline and I thoroughly enjoyed their visit.
Tragically, not long after this visit, Pauline fell ill and sadly passed away. During the lead-up to Pauline´s passing, I know that Nancy and Bill were in touch with her, and I must highlight how particularly supportive they were during that dark period. I am profoundly grateful for the encouragement and support they provided to Pauline; it meant so much to her.
In September 2017, I visited Bill and Nancy in their home near Kansas City, where they gave me a week to remember. Their generosity knew no bounds. It was a fabulous week filled with many activities and visits to important places. I also had the pleasure of meeting Bill´s son Sean and his grandson Ryan. I spent an afternoon with them watching the Chiefs Play at the Arrowhead Stadium, creating unforgettable memories of my visit to Kansas City.
Now, with the sad passing of Nancy just six months ago, followed by Bill, I can say they truly stood out as a remarkable couple. Though our moments together as friends were fewer than I would have liked, it was clear that Bill possessed a genuine warmth and compassion that inspired everyone around him.
They had a unique gift for making every person feel valued and heard. While words may offer little solace, I know that Bill´s & Nancys legacy will live on through all of us who had the honour of knowing both Bill and Nancy Dycus.

I knew Bill and Nancy from my days on the KCPD. We remained friends for the remaining years. I spoke to both before my move to Hilton Head Island SC two years ago. They both were kind and loyal friends. Bill had a wonderful sense of humor and was one of the most ethical individuals I have had the honor to know. I still reminisce about our trip (Bill and Nancy) together to Las Vegas in the 70's. I will miss them both. Rest in Peace.

Our dialysis team adored Bill. He was always so kind and had a smile on his face. I called him "Major". He is missed by many at our clinic.
