MARQUETTE, MI – William M. "Mike" Farmer, age 74, of Marquette, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2024, at UP Health System – Marquette, in the loving, comforting care of his wife and brother.
Born November 8, 1949, in Detroit, a son of Locke and Kathleen (Murray) Farmer, Mike was a graduate of St. Ambrose High School, Class of 1967. Mike had an earnest desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. It was this passion that led him to a career in emergency services. Mike was a dedicated paramedic and volunteer firefighter, a role he embraced with valor, serving his community tirelessly. Achieving his associate degree, Mike taught emergency medicine at Detroit General Hospital which was affiliated with Wayne State University. His endeavors did not go unnoticed, as he was recognized as the most commendated medic in the City of Detroit during his tenure, earning him the respect and admiration of both colleagues and those he so selflessly assisted. In 1978, Mike relocated to Marquette where he continued to serve as a paramedic with Marquette General Hospital. For 27 years, he was a steadfast presence in the community, delivering aid during critical moments and providing comfort to the afflicted. He was always willing to share his expertise and eager to learn the latest techniques.
On April 9, 1994, Mike was united in marriage to Carol McEachern in Las Vegas.
In retirement, Mike didn't slow down, volunteering with the Powell Township Fire Department and EMS, where his knowledge and experience continued to safeguard his community. His many interests and hobbies included researching his family's genealogy, spending exciting times at the casino, being outdoors and enjoying the tranquility of nature, fishing, and bird hunting. Another source of pride and accomplishment came as Mike marked his 21-year milestone of sobriety.
