William Shields Gnann, "Willie" to friends and family, passed away peacefully at home on February 16, 2024, at the age of 70 in his hometown of Columbus, GA, where he was born on January 21, 1954, to the late Dr. William S. and Carolyn H. Gnann.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
William was a graduate of Hardaway High School, Class of 1972. He attended Columbus State University to further his education. He also earned a Master Gardener Certificate.
For over five decades, William cultivated a career in horticulture and landscaping. He served a 14-year tenure as the Georgia Department of Agriculture Plant Protection Field Agent for West Central Georgia. William's impact was profound as he advised and supported countless individuals and businesses in the planting and care of their gardens and landscapes.
William was a professional drummer since age 20, playing in numerous local bands including Fatback, Chaos, Nancy & Company, Don Thomas & Disco-Country, The Goodtimes Band, Streak O'Lean and Misty Harbor. He sat in with about a hundred others. He once played for President Reagan, as he most humbly recounted.
He is survived by his step-daughters, Savannah Jeter (Billy) and Abigail Sheperd; his sister, Jackie Gnann Weaver (Andy); his brothers, Robert (Merry) and Joe Gnann; his nephew, Rob Gnann; his grandniece, Caroline Gnann; Aunt and Uncle Patty and Johnny Mallard, and several other beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
William was an avid gardener who found solace in the soils and plants he tended so carefully. Fishing also provided him with a connection to the natural world he dearly loved.
He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As the seasons change and flowers bloom, those who walk through the gardens of Columbus, GA, will feel the presence of William Gnann. His spirit will live on in the rustling leaves, the vibrant blossoms, and the rich earth he loved so much.
