William Gruner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Niebur Funeral Chapel - Barry on Oct. 2, 2025.
William R. Gruner, age 76, of New Canton, IL passed away on Wednesday October 1, 2025. He was born on February 11, 1949, in Jersey City, New Jersey to William and Angelina (Colasurdo) Gruner. He leaves behind his partner of 44 years, John Toumbs. William and John were joined in a civil union June 21, 2011, and married June 21, 2014.

Bill grew up in New Jersey and was introduced to the opera at an early age; it became a huge part of his life. Bill later studied opera, and his vocal coach was Hugo, who was also Italian soprano, Renata Tebaldi's coach. Bill went on to work for the first Gucci Store in Chicago on Michigan Avenue, where he played an intricate part in the opening of the store and became the assistant manager. Bill continued in retail sales in Chicago which led to a job at I. Magnin in California where he became the buyer for the store. Bill moved to Palm Springs and became a property manager, before retiring and moving to central Illinois. Bill and John enjoyed travelling especially to Santa Fe, New Mexico. He loved his cats and dachshunds. Bill was a caring, intelligent man, and had a wicked sense of humor. He enjoyed listening to the opera every night, and enjoyed a good glass of bourbon, while sitting on his front porch.

Bill is survived by his loving husband, John Toumbs of New Canton, IL; sister Susan Milton of Florida; brother-in-law Rick (Eva) Toumbs; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family Dori and Michael Galanis. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Angelina Gruner; in-laws, Nola and Leo Toumbs; and brother-in-law David Toumbs.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and no services will be held. Memorials are suggested to be made to Shearer Cemetery or Barry Healthcare & Senior Living Activity Fund. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry is handling the arrangements.
