John Edward Gruner, 81, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026 at St. Francis Hospice House. Born on September 20, 1944, in Indianapolis to the late Wilbert R. (Fritz) and Patricia (Woirhaye) Gruner. He dedicated much of his life to education and sports, notably during his lengthy tenure at Franklin Central High School. From 1966 until his retirement in 2000, John not only taught Business but also coached wrestling and football, impacting the lives of countless students and athletes.

John's commitment to education began with his studies at St. Phillip Neri School followed by Scecina Memorial High School, from which he graduated in 1962. He continued his academic journey at Indiana Central College, where he wrestled and played football, completing his education in 1966. His passion for sports extended beyond the classroom; John was an enthusiastic bowler, participating in various leagues throughout his life at Southern Bowl and Expo Bowl, and even traveling with bowling teams.

Family was central to John's life. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Jana Mason Gruner, and took great pride in his role as a father and grandfather. John cherished spending time with his children, Andrea (Matt) Carrothers, Allison (Trent) Bodine, and Adam (Shelby) Gruner, as well as delighting in the activities of his grandchildren, Marin Bodine, Elise Bodine, Ruby Gruner, Graham Bodine, Gus Gruner, and Theo Carrothers. He took great pride in being an uncle to his nieces and nephews, who he supported, encouraged and loved.

John's legacy includes notable accomplishments, including being inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame, recognizing his dedication to the sport and his athletes. His contributions to the community and the lives of young people will be remembered for generations.

John is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and his brother, Michael (Patty) Gruner. He is preceded in death by his twin sister, Joan Elizabeth Yohler; brother, David R. Gruner; sister, Patricia Ann Gruner; and step-siblings, Patricia Wells, Mary Rita Riley, and Joseph Sullivan.

Visitation will be held on January 16, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Memorial service at 11:00 AM at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, located at 8300 Rahke Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46217.
