William H. Gunther, of Downers Grove, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 2, 2024, at the age of 91.
Born in Chicago, Illinois to parents Margaret and Henry Gunther, Bill was the oldest of two children. He attended St. Mel High School and graduated Class of 1950. Following High School, Bill enrolled at DePaul University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1954. After graduation, he served in the United States Army. While stationed in Germany, Bill met Annemarie Buss and the two married in 1956, in Germany. Bill and Annemarie started their life together, purchased a home and moved to Addison, Illinois where they began their family and had two children: Monica and Stephan. In 1969 they relocated to Downers Grove where they bought their forever home.
With his background in Science, Bill began his professional career with Argonne National Laboratory as a Chemist and remained with Argonne for the entirety of his career until his retirement. His accomplishments included many published articles regarding experiments he was involved with.
Bill and Annemarie were active members at their church, St. Mary of Gostyn in Downers Grove, Illinois, since 1969. They both dedicated many volunteer hours together with the Church's PADS program ( Annmarie cooked for PADS) and the food pantry. They loved their church family and especially the choir members (Annemarie sang in the choir for 25 years).
Bill had many hobbies and found enjoyment as an avid bike rider in the summer (he liked to stop and chat with all the neighbors, often chatting more than riding), a traveler (claimed to be a Europhile), Cubs and Blackhawks fan (he loved sports) and did the Chicago Tribune crossword puzzle everyday. He was incredibly handy and often did major projects arounds their home
Bill was the beloved husband of 60 years to the late Annemarie. Loving father of Monica Griesemer and the late Stephan (Dawn) Gunther. Cherished Opa of Emily Griesemer, Margaret (Drew) Malone, Meredith (Mike) David, Jake (Kelsey) Gunther, James Gunther and Lacey (Connor) Kelley. Proud Great-Grandfather of Ryan, Alice, George, Rylie and Evie. Dear son of the late Margaret and the late Henry Gunther. Loving Brother of Carole (the late Vince) Nowell. Bill will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary of Gostyn food pantry that was very near and dear to his and Annemarie's heart.
