In Loving Memory of William L. Hartz
William L. Hartz passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 16, at the age of 80.
Born in Philmont, New York, to Marguerite and Ernest Hartz, Bill didn't meet his father until he was 18
months old-when Ernest returned from serving in World War II. Bill grew up in Merrick and Bellmore on
Long Island and graduated from Wellington C. Mepham High School. After high school, he followed his
adventurous spirit to California, where he took up surfing. He returned to New York upon hearing of
President John F. Kennedy's assassination.
Bill married Linda Eastman, and together they raised three children. A skilled machinist, Bill contributed
his talents to the Grumman Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) and the Tomcat fighter jet. He later continued
his career at several companies, ultimately retiring from NSK in Bennington, Vermont.
Deeply involved in his children's lives, Bill was an active participant in the Boy Scouts. He served as Cub
Scout leader of Troop 219 at Bellmore Methodist Church, and later as an adult leader with Troop 192 at
Bellmore Presbyterian Church-earning recognition (and some bragging rights) for helping craft award-
winning Pinewood Derby cars.
Bill was a passionate history buff, particularly fascinated by the Civil War. He and Linda, who
predeceased him in 2015, shared a love of square dancing, which brought them to Vermont-a place
they came to love and made their home in 1996.
Bill found joy in woodworking, golf, cooking, and above all, being a grandfather. He was always eager to
share a new recipe with anyone who would listen. A lifelong animal lover, he had a special fondness for
cats.
He is survived by his children Lori Clune, William E. Hartz, and Christopher Hartz; his sister Carolyn
"Cookie" Barrett; grandchildren Ryan and Connor Clune, Kaitlin and James Hartz, and Brianna and
Selena Hartz; and his longtime companion, Susan Katz.
A memorial service will be held on October 18 at 11 am at the Old First Church in Bennington, Vermont.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to
the Old First Church in Bill's memory.
