On August 5, 2025, the world lost a gentle soul with a curious mind and an adventurous spirit. William James Hoenig, 66, passed away peacefully at his home in Lomita, California.

Born on August 10, 1958, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Will grew up with an insatiable curiosity about how things worked - and how they might be made better. That curiosity became a lifelong gift he shared with everyone who knew him. He earned a bachelor's degree in communications from DePauw University, but his education never truly stopped; he was always learning, tinkering, building, and creating.

Throughout his life, Will wore many titles: son, brother, husband, stepfather, and friend. But he also carried quieter ones - problem-solver, repairman, artist, dreamer. His creativity could turn an old piece of wood into a work of art, or a weathered house into a warm and welcoming sanctuary.

His beloved 1976 BMW and self-upgraded VW bus were more than vehicles; they were passports to adventure. In them, he roamed the California coast and crisscrossed the country, collecting stories, memories, and the quiet joy of the open road.

Will spent nearly two decades living in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, while working for US Air. Taking advantage of a flexible schedule, he condensed his monthly flight hours into tight windows, freeing large blocks of time for creating art on canvas and restoring his 100-year-old home. With his own hands, he transformed the house into an elegant and inviting home.

In 2011, fate brought him to Catherine Viaje. They married the same year and together turned their Lomita home into a reflection of their shared love - a place filled with beauty, comfort, and the small, perfect touches Will loved to create.

Will's life was anchored by family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Catherine; his cherished stepdaughter, Katrina; his loving parents, Mary Belle and William Hoenig; his siblings Teresa (Michael David), Steven (Julia), Celia, and Diane (Michael Flynn); and his nieces and nephews - Madison, Emeric, Jordan, Marla, Montana, Michael, and Sidney - all of whom carry pieces of his humor, kindness, and wisdom in their hearts.

Will had a gift for lifting spirits. With a mischievous grin, he'd hike his pants up like Pee-wee Herman or deliver a perfectly timed joke that left everyone laughing. His personal motto - "Where there's a Will, there's a way" - wasn't just a clever play on words; it was how he lived his life, facing challenges with determination, ingenuity, and humor.

He will be remembered for his friendliness, generosity, and willingness to help. His nature was to spread love and kindness to everyone he encountered. Will had a rare gift for making others smile and laugh, leaving a lasting imprint on all who crossed his path. His departure leaves an unfillable space in the lives of his loved ones, acquaintances, and all those he influenced. May his memory be cherished as a reflection of the remarkable life he lived.

Those who knew him will remember his generosity, adventurous spirit, and the way he made every gathering a little lighter and every heart a little warmer.
