William Alan Jacobs

William Alan Jacobs went to be with the Lord on August 21, 2025, at the age of 62. Though his passing was unexpected, we take comfort in knowing that he is now rejoicing in heaven.
Born on September 24, 1962, in Camden, Arkansas, Bill was the youngest of four boys. From an early age, he was captivated by the wonder of space-particularly the moon landing-which sparked a lifelong dream to become an aerospace engineer. That passion never faded. He pursued his calling at Mississippi State University, where he also found community and made lifelong friendships through the Baptist Student Union. He quickly came to love the school's unique traditions, especially the sound of cowbells on game day.
Bill began his aerospace career with Rockwell International in Downey, California in 1984 and later moved to Houston following the Challenger accident to work for United Space Alliance. Over the next 16 years, he specialized in ascent, descent, and entry, eventually earning the distinguished role of Orbit Flight Dynamics Officer (FDO) in NASA's Mission Control. Over his career, he supported more than 45 space shuttle launches. When the shuttle program ended in 2011, Bill joined Sierra Nevada Corporation in Colorado, contributing to the Dream Chaser commercial space project. In 2014, he returned to Houston to work on the Orion spacecraft. His career was marked not only by technical excellence but by the deep friendships he built within the NASA community. He truly loved what he did.
In 1986, shortly after arriving in Houston, Bill began attending University Baptist Church, where he joined the singles group and met the love of his life, Donna Walker. They were married in 1989 and began serving side by side in children's ministry. Together, they built a home rooted in love, faith, and service. Bill and Donna welcomed three children-Rachel, John, and Julianna-and embraced the joyful chaos of parenting: soccer games, swim meets, baseball, dance recitals, and coaching. A proud Eagle Scout, Bill passed on his love for camping and hiking, leading his family on memorable adventures across the country.
At the heart of Bill's life was his unwavering faith in God. He led his family with humility and quiet strength, modeling a life of integrity and devotion. For over a decade, he served faithfully in the children's ministry at Sagemont Church, where his creativity and sense of fun shined as a puppeteer. His many voices and characters brought Bible stories to life, helping children experience God's love in a joyful and engaging way.
After retiring in December 2022, Bill and Donna began a new chapter of adventure together, traveling the world and visiting 45 countries. Whether at home or abroad, in work or in rest, Bill lived with purpose, kindness, and gratitude.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Carolyn Jacobs, and his brother, Bob Jacobs. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Donna Jacobs; their children, Rachel, John, and Julianna; his brothers, Tom (and wife Virginia) and Dennis (and wife Alisa); as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Bill's legacy is one of deep devotion-to his family, to his faith, and to the calling God placed on his heart as a young boy. He will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held at University Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 26, at 10:00 a.m., with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to two of Bill's favorite charities: KSBJ (a local Christian radio station) and the Houston Food Bank.
