Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chandler Funeral Home - Ellettsville Chapel on Dec. 23, 2025.
William "Bill" C. Johnson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at his home in Gosport, Indiana. Born on May 25, 1941, in Martin County, Indiana, to Audrey and Mary (Hamilton) Johnson.
Bill's journey began in the heart of Indiana, where he was raised alongside his siblings. In April 1962, he married his first love, Susie George, who sadly preceded him in death in 1989. Their union was blessed with two children, Jetta (Steve) Dunsford and William M. "Billy" Johnson, who also preceded him in death in 2018. Bill found love again and married Mary Dodson in February 1990, who remains to honor his memory.
A man of great skill and dedication, Bill retired from General Motors Central Foundry in Bedford after a commendable tenure of over 30 years. His passion for craftsmanship extended beyond his career as he owned and operated the Bill Johnson Body Shop in Bedford for over 25 years. Bill's work ethic and commitment to excellence left a lasting impact on all who worked alongside him.
Bill's interests were as diverse as they were engaging. An avid car enthusiast, he could often be found tinkering with engines or admiring the sleek lines of a classic automobile. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for hunting and fishing, activities that brought him both peace and excitement. Bill was also a dedicated farmer, taking pride in the land and the bounty it provided.
Family was the cornerstone of Bill's life. He reveled in the joys of watching his grandchildren grow, play on the farm, and embark on their own adventures. His love for them was as boundless as the Indiana sky. Bill's presence at family gatherings will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to flourish in the lives of his loved ones.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Mary of Gosport; his brother, Gerald Johnson of Bedford; his daughter, Jetta (Steve) Dunsford of Floyds Knobs; step-children, Terri, Leslie, and Kenny; grandchildren, Lindsey (Jordan) Plunkett, Jack Dunsford, Sam Dunsford, Billy Johnson, Jr, Dillon Martin, Jacob Mathis, Megan Bandy, Tyler Amonett, Jenetta Martin, Samantha Martin, Jeri Martin, and Tamara Robinson; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Nolan, Liam, Colson, Jayce, Monte, and Kason. His close friends and neighbors, Eldon Hojem and Greg Chapman helped Bill on the farm and many other projects, along with numerous other friends and relatives who were touched by his kindness and warmth.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Susie; his son, Billy; and his brother, Bernard "Dean."
A man who could fix anything, Bill was the go-to person for family and friends in need of a helping hand. His love for westerns on TV was only matched by his love for storytelling and sharing laughter with those around him.
There will be no services per Bill's wishes. Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville is assisting with arrangements. Share condolences, memories and more with Bill's family by visiting his tribute page at www.chandlerfh.com
