William Rufus Marter age 94, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Eupora, MS. Rufus was born July 4, 1930, in Webster County, MS to Joseph Andrew Marter and Willie Mae Clanton Marter. Rufus worked for a short while in a factory, but decided farming was his true calling and farmed until the age of fifty. He was well known for his huge gardens as a matter of fact, one of his favorite things to do was give away his vegetables. Another enterprise he enjoyed was farm equipment sales. Rufus loved going to equipment auctions and maintained a tractor lot by his home in Bellefontaine, Marter Equipment for years buying and selling equipment until COVID closed it down. Rufus was a devoted caregiver to his wife, Catherine "Cat" for many years until her death in 2005. In the fall of 2006, Rufus married Faye Pritchett Perkins. They have been married almost eighteen years. Rufus was an avid hunter and loved spending time with his big yellow cat, A.J. and eating at Mitchell's Central Service Grill in Eupora, MS. Mr. Marter is survived by his wife, Faye Perkins Marter, Bellefontaine, MS; four daughters, Linda (Gary) Rook, Mathews, LA, Anne (Woody) McGee, Eupora, MS; Sherri (Barry) Reedy, Bellefontaine, MS and Tammy Ellis, Mathiston, MS; one sister, Patti (Jerry) Toney, Grenada, MS; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Catherine "Cat" Marter; both parents, Joseph Andrew and Willie Mae Clanton Marter; one daughter, Rachel McBride; one grandson, Ben Rook and three sisters, Ruby Helen (Kitty) Marter Beck, Mattie Mae Marter Middleton and Earlene Marter. Funeral Services for Mr. Marter will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Bellefontaine, MS. Mr. Marter's family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at Oliver Funeral Home in Eupora, MS. Mr. Marter's body will also lie in state on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Bellefontaine, MS from 1:00PM until time for Services. Interment will follow at Philadelphia Cemetery in Webster County, MS. The Graveside/Committal Services will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church instead of Philadelphia Cemetery. Rev. Josh Bingham and Rev. Hugh Bland will officiate. Pallbearers are Jonathan Salley, Matthew Eidt, Kenton McGee, Shaun Rook, Matt Ellis, Curtis McBride and Calvin McBride. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora is in charge of all arrangements.
