MATTIS, JR. PHD WILLIAM "BILL" March 16, 1943 - January 3, 2026 William (Bill) Edward Mattis, Jr passed away, at home in Luther Crest Retirement Community, Allentown, PA on January 03, 2026. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Umlauf) Mattis. They were married 32 years in June. Born in Philadelphia, on March 16,1943, he was the son of the late William Edward Mattis and Mary (Calahan) Mattis. Bill graduated from PMC Wiedner College and received his Ph. D in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University. He taught at Penn State and Villanova Universities, becoming a pioneer in satellite communications, modem technology, and early voice-recognition research. Bill liked Disco music, dancing and connecting with his family and friends, especially his nieces and nephews. Umlauf of Williamstown, MA. Uncle Bill is survived by 8 nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart; Jessica C. Umlauf, MBA, Sally D. Umlauf, DVM, J. Pearse Umlauf, Ann U. Brewer, Esquire, (Andrew), John I. Umlauf, Zachary C. Umlauf, David C. Mack, DO, and Erica M. Cisneros. Also loved were great nieces and nephews; Nathanial and Lucas Cisneros, Ellia Mack, Jack Brewer, Hazel and Harper Umlauf. Bill was predeceased by his parents and sister, Patricia Private Graveside Services were held at Oakland Cemetery, Phila, PA. A Memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
