William McAree Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Norfolk Chapel on May 25, 2024.
Capt. William (Bill) Bernard McAree II of Norfolk, VA formerly Virginia Beach passed to his heavenly home on May 16, 2024. He was reunited with his beautiful wife, Rose McAree. Bill was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Charles AP McAree and Margret Dodd McAree. He was the oldest of 5 children.
Bill graduated from the US Naval Academy, class of 1959. It was in Annapolis that he met and later married Rose Marie Tropea. Bill spent 31 years in the US Navy, most of the time spent in Admiral Rickover's nuclear Navy. His career highlights include a "walk around the world" in 30 minutes while on the USS Whale SSN-638 on 4/6/69 which commemorated the 60th anniversary of the USS Nautilus North Pole surfacing. He took command of the USS Thomas Edison SSBN-610, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, in Roda Spain as a Lt. Commander. After retiring from the US Navy, Bill became the managing broker for the first Long and Foster office in Virginia Beach. He later became a Real Estate Appraiser, a career he loved and only retired from at 86 years old. Bill and Rose had a beautiful life together. They loved to travel, attend the Opera, dance and go to movies, sometimes twice in a day! Bill was a technology junkie, always having the newest gadget. At 88 he loved to pay using his Apple Watch!
Bill is survived by his daughter Catherine Windsheimer (David Windsheimer) grandson Michael Windsheimer (Andee Peña) granddaughter Taylor Rose Downing (William Downing) Son William (Billy) B McAree III (Elizabeth Nash), sisters Abigail Barker (Bill Barker) and Patti McAree Dehart (Al Thomas). Bill was preceded by his two brothers, Charles McAree and Michael McAree. He had a smile for everyone and called everyone by name. He will be missed by all those who knew him, but we will remember him by trying to emulate his positive disposition! RIP Dad, we love you.
Bill's celebration of life will be held 6/28/24 at 1:00 PM at Christ and St. Lukes Episcopal Church Norfolk, VA. In Lieu of Flowers donations are requested in Bills name to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of his beautiful wife Rose.

Dear family and friends of Bill,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, and having been recently informed, we offer our sincere condolences at Bill´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Andrew Jackson SSBN-619, USS Abraham Lincoln SSBN-602 and as Commanding Officer of USS Thomas A Edison SSBN/SSN-610.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
