William McGhee Obituary

William McGhee
AIKEN - William Madison McGhee Jr., affectionately known as Bill to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, at the age of 88. A proud native of Aiken, South Carolina, Bill was the embodiment of a legacy rooted in community contribution and dedication to social betterment. He was the son of William Madison McGhee and Cecilia Johnson McGhee, both of whom preceded him in death.
Bill's early years in Aiken were foundational, as he attended the Aiken Graded School until the fourth grade. In pursuit of better job opportunities, his family moved to Philadelphia, PA, where he attended the prestigious Central High School and graduated. He continued his education at Morehouse College, earning a bachelor's degree, and later obtained an MBA from the University of Rochester in New York.
Following his academic pursuits, Bill proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for six years and rising to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. His professional journey included employment at Eastman Kodak and Xerox Corporations, where he not only honed his skills but also exhibited his commitment to impactful leadership. Passionate about creating opportunities for others, Bill made the bold decision to resign from Xerox to become the President of Fighton Incorporated, a pioneering initiative focused on Black-owned and operated industrial production.
In 1985, Bill returned to Aiken with his beloved wife, Beatrice B. McGhee, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. He dedicated the latter part of his career to education, serving on the faculties of Aiken and Denmark Technical Colleges, where he was known for his role as Director of Workforce Development at Denmark Technical College.
Bill's commitment to his community remained unwavering even after retirement. He became a cornerstone in the preservation of the Schofield neighborhood, forming the Schofield Community Association and serving as its President. His tireless advocacy for the recognition and revitalization of this historically significant community showcased his deep love and devotion to Aiken. Bill was a member of various organizations, including the Cumberland AME Church, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Royal Aiken Knights and the Aiken Bridge Club.
He is survived by his devoted wife Beatrice, and their children: Jay Anthony McGhee (Jo Lynn), David Wayne McGhee, Terri Lynn McGhee, Micheal Todd McGhee (Tiffany). Bill will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings, Yvonne James, LJ McGhee, David Wesley McGhee, and Rev. Angela McGhee, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Taylor, Cansler, Madison, Morgan, Zachary, Nathan, and Reagan, along with numerous cousins and friends.
Bill McGhee's legacy of love, service, and commitment to community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind a profound impact on the city of Aiken and its residents, ensuring that his contribution to the community's history will never be forgotten.
A celebration of life to honor Bill will be held at the African American Cultural Center on June 13th at 11 to 1 PM where friends and family will gather to celebrate his rich legacy and enduring spirit.

BB and family,

What an honor to have Bill in your lives as long as you did. Although I did not know him that well, I always enjoyed playing bridge with the two of you at the Aiken Club, and down at the Hilton Head regional. We will be keeping all of you in our prayers. God Bless !
