It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William "Bill" Thomas Mercer Sr. on August 4th, 2025, in
Los Gatos, CA at the age of 92 years old.
Bill was born in Buffalo, NY on February 3rd, 1933. He was the son of the late Dr. Everett T. Mercer and Mary Curtin Mercer and stepson to the late Ella Mercer.
Bill was proceeded in death by his wife Vilma, with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. He is survived by his six children, Myra, Susan (Ed Orekar), Michelle Livoni, Bill Jr. (Heidi), Jerry (Kresha) and Colette; his seven grandchildren, Michael (Tara), Mackenzie, Thomas (Madeline), David (Jamie), Samuel, Melanie, John "Jack"; eight great-grandchildren; brother Everett "Red" and many nieces and nephews.
Bill served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, spending four years aboard the USS Philippine Sea (CV-47). Following his service, he attended Canisius College prior to moving his family to the blossoming fruit orchards of
Los Gatos, CA.
Bill had a dedicated career with Lockheed Corporation where he held many management positions, all while he and Vilma lovingly raised their six children. Their home was a lively hub of activity, always open to family and friends for countless gatherings.
Bill was a man of many passions. He and Vilma enjoyed skiing, river rafting, camping and traveling the world. He was also a fan of the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, and the San Jose Sharks. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts, Indian Guides and coached youth baseball for many years. As a volunteer for the Los Gatos Police Department, Bill co-founded and spearheaded the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for the Town of Los Gatos. It was important for Bill to give back to the community. He enjoyed working with St. Mary's church by delivering to food banks, teaching ESL classes and hosting dinners for the families at the Women's Shelter. Bill was a passionate supporter of Amador STARS, a non- profit organization serving cancer patients. He was also a talented winemaker, crafting his own Chateau Le Shedde wines, winning awards for his creations. Bill had fun keeping up his wine knowledge by participating with the same wine tasting group for over 40 years.
May he rest in peace. We will miss him dearly.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary's of the Immaculate Conception in Los Gatos on September 19th at 11am.
