William Hiram "Bill" Mullins

William (Bill) Hiram Mullins a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, died peacefully in Columbus, GA, Sunday, November 30th at the age of 87. Born May 5, 1938, in Lansdale, PA, he dedicated his life to his family and his beloved career with AFLAC.

After high school he joined the Naval Air Reserve and served at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY. He had immense admiration for all branches of the service and got great pleasure from picking up the tab at restaurants for anyone he saw in uniform.

Bill grew up in Pennsylvania where he worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He held many jobs in the security industry, including being a detective with the Miley Agency. He, his father-in-law and brother-in-law briefly owned a remodeling business, with painting being his specialty. Philco Ford was his last employer, before he took his cousin John Amos' advice and came south to help set up a security department at AFLAC. He spent several years as Vice President of Personnel and Purchasing but retired as Vice President of Investigative Services. Bill loved everything AFLAC and never wavered on his loyalty to his cousins John, Paul and Bill Amos nor to the mission of the company.

Outside of his work life, Bill spent many hours volunteering in various capacities at Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church and Open Door. If there was a task to be done, he would gladly grab his work gloves, roll up his sleeves and help wherever he was needed. His favorite place to be, other than beside his wife, was anywhere his grandchildren were. Soccer games, cheerleading, gymnastics, school plays, birthday parties, anything that involved his grandchildren was a grand occasion for him.

Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Judy; his daughter Kathleen Mullins; his son Brad Mullins (Parker); his four grandchildren, Elizabeth Strellner (Austin), Kyle Mason, Lydia Mullins and Will Mullins; his two sisters Dorothy Slater and Harriet Miller; his sister-in-law Joy McIntyre (Butch) and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Esther Mullins and brother-in-law Don Slater.

A special thank you to Teresa Pena for the last year she spent with Bill, helping him at home and taking him anywhere he wanted to go. They became fast friends and he appreciated her sweet nature and willingness to help him any way she could. Also, thank you to LaWanda Rahming for taking such good care of Bill in the last few months. You both have been such a gift to our family.

A memorial service will be held January 9, 2026, 3:30 PM at St Paul Church of Columbus located at 2101 Wildwood Avenue, Columbus, GA 31906. The family will visit with friends and family immediately following the service.

The Open Door Walk Classic and Circles program were ministries they both loved and supported for years. In the last year Bill became the Guardian of Safety and Cheer at Open Door. He was lovingly known as Papa Mullins to many who came to participate in and volunteer with the Open Door Circles Program.
