William Petrone Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, Inc. - New Rochelle on Jan. 27, 2026.
William R. "Will" Petrone – beloved father passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 25, 2026, in Newtown, CT, at the age of 102 years and 5 months. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

William was born on August 20, 1923, in Mount Vernon, NY, to Damiano and Assunta Petrone. He attended Mount Vernon schools before proudly serving in the United States Army during World War II.

Will answered his country's call to serve at 19 years old for 2 years,193 straight days, on the front line. He would later be celebrated as one of the last surviving members of his combat unit. William served as an Artillery Sergeant with the 751st Battalion. His distinguished unit fought through Nazi-controlled Europe with General George S. Patton's Third Army, including in the brutal Battle of the Bulge, one of the most significant engagements of the conflict. A decorated WWII veteran, William was a leader, served with courage, discipline and pride. He was honored by his community, local veteran organizations, and recognized by state and national leaders for his service at various gatherings and commemorations. His military service remained a defining and deeply meaningful chapter in his life.

After the war, Will returned home and married the love of his life, Antoinette "Annie" Coschignano and together built a beautiful family life in New Rochelle, NY. Will and Annie shared 37 wonderful years of marriage and raised 3 children.

A true hero, devoted father and family man, and gentle soul, Will was known for his kindness, engaging stories, and always having a warm word for everyone he met. He loved sports and remained active for most of his life. In his youth, he was a talented basketball player, bowled in a league, and enjoyed watching NY Giants football, Yankees baseball, and hockey. He continued to play golf even into his late 90's.

In his later years, William resided at Maplewood at Newtown, where he loved living, surrounded by staff who became a second family to him. He was known for his sharp wit, steadfast determination, and warm spirit. Will lived every day with a smile and a modest outlook on his extraordinary experiences.

William is survived by his children: daughter Janet (John) Scialo and their children Antoinette "Annie" (Chris) and Robert John; son Charles (Elise) and children Sarah, Rachel, William, and Samuel; son Nicholas (Laura) and their children Jeffrey (Katie) and Adam (Whitney); great grandchildren Daniel, Rocco, Sydney, and Andrew, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

William shared a close relationship with the Walsh family: Michael, Marilyn, Steve, Rob and Jimmy as well as many loving friends and extended family members.

William was a wonderful father, deeply loved, and an honorable man whose strength, humility, and sense of humor left lasting impressions on all who knew him. He will be remembered for his patriotism, respectfulness, resilience, and unwavering love for his family. His life was one of service – both to those he loved and to his country – and his legacy will endure through the generations he leaves behind.
