William Phillips Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Directors - Reese Chapel on Apr. 22, 2025.
William Gordon Phillips, age 81, of Reese, formerly of Bay City, Michigan, and Englewood, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2025, at McLaren Hospital in Bay City, Michigan. Born on October 20, 1943, in Bay City, son of the late William Phillips and Elizabeth (Milne) Eddy. William was a man whose life was marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and a passion for the simple pleasures in life. William, affectionately known as Toby to his friends and loved ones, was a proud graduate of Bay City Central High School. He continued his education at Delta College, where he received his associate's degree. He served his country honorably in the Army Reserves. On April 11, 1966, he married the former Jean Gatza. She preceded him in death in 2013.
Professionally, Toby was known for his strong work ethic and leadership skills. He worked as a manager at Kmart for many years, where he was respected by his colleagues and staff for his fairness and ability to inspire teamwork. Later, he and his beloved wife, Jean, owned and operated the Northern Bar in Bay City. Together, they created a welcoming establishment that became a staple in the community.
Toby's life was enriched by his loving family. He is survived by his three daughters, Jennifer (Tim) Anderson, Wendy (Scott) Westenbarger, and Julie (Don) Rau. He was a cherished grandfather to Cody Rau, Brooke Westenbarger, and Natalie Anderson. His warmth and guidance will be deeply missed by his special friend, Julie Wonch, and his brother, James Phillips. An avid outdoorsman, William found joy in hunting and fishing, activities that allowed him to appreciate nature's beauty and the company of good friends. He also had a fondness for scratching off lottery tickets.
Cremation has taken place and per Toby's wishes no services are planned at this time. All of us at Ware Smith Woolever are honored the Phillips family has entrusted us with the care of their loved one.
