William Phillips Obituary

William Phillips
September 6, 1934 - January 10, 2026
William Lee Phillips, lovingly known as "Red" or "Mr. P," was born on Sept. 6, 1934, in Wagner, OK, and raised in Yuma, AZ. He was an All-American football player, a devoted husband, and served in the U.S. Army. After earning his teaching degree in Flagstaff, he inspired countless students as a beloved teacher at East Flagstaff Junior High. Red's passion for Arizona's history and natural beauty led him to work as a Grand Canyon tour bus operator and volunteer for the Veterans Administration. He was known for his kindness, faith, and love of family. Red is survived by his daughters DeeDee Phillips and Lynette Pompa; grandchildren Nicole Swartwout and Jacob Jelinek; and great-grandchildren Peyton Swartwout and Khloe Swartwout. His gentle spirit touched not only his family but also generations of students, colleagues, friends, and fellow travelers. Many recall how he would go out of his way to help a neighbor or quietly pay for a stranger's meal, always embodying kindness and humility. He will be remembered for his warmth and generosity by all who knew him.
Services will be held Tuesday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church.
