William "Ed" Edward Phipps Sr., 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 12, 2025, in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Born on August 23, 1941, to Rollie and Anita Ester Phipps, Ed was a lifelong resident of Louisville and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend.
Ed dedicated over 39 years of hard work to Bluegrass Cooperage, where he worked proudly as a cooper. Known for his laid-back nature and warm heart, he was the kind of man who always had a story to share and a smile to offer.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Ed was an avid treasure hunter at local flea markets and Peddlers Malls, always on the lookout for a hidden gem. He cherished family vacations to the Makai Beachfront near Daytona, Florida, where lasting memories were made. Whether he was hunting in Mt. Sterling, playing a good game of horseshoes, or restoring cast iron skillets to their former glory, Ed enjoyed every moment.
Music was another great love in his life. The voices of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Kenny Rogers filled his home and heart, bringing joy and nostalgia.
Ed’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a constant source of love, strength, and support to those closest to him. His presence brought comfort and laughter, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Rollie Phipps and Anita Ester Gilley Phipps; son, William “Eddie” Phipps Jr.; and a brother, Irvin Phipps.
Left to cherish his memory, Ed is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Joycelene Anderson Phipps; 4 children, Shaun Phipps, Kim Phipps, Tammy Beisler, and Shannon Griffiths; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 2 siblings, Phyllis Kirkpatrick (Ronnie), and Junior Phipps; and a host of extended family and close friends.
