With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Ted Purvis, age 93, who went home to be with the Lord on February 19th, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith, hard work, and devotion to family.

A celebration of his life will be held at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Hartsville on February 27th at 1PM with Rev. Todd Davis presiding. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall before the service from 12-1 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church, Crescent Hospice of Hartsville, or a charity of your choice honoring Ted’s lifelong faith and servant’s heart.

Born on September 17th, 1932, in Darlington, SC, Ted was raised in humble circumstances. Growing up poor taught him the values of perseverance, gratitude for life’s blessings, and a deep appreciation for family and community. Those early lessons shaped a person known for quiet strength, generosity, and a willingness to help those in need. A man of strong and unwavering faith, Ted trusted in God through every season of life. He was a loyal church member and spent many years teaching the Bible. In Hartsville, he was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Scripture, prayer, and faith were the cornerstones of his life.

Ted spent over 40 years working at Milliken & Company, providing for his family through honest, steady work. Known as dependable, smart, and hardworking, he took great pride in doing things the right way and earned the respect of coworkers and friends alike. His work was more than a job and reflected responsibility, perseverance, and love for family. Outside of work, Ted found joy in life’s simple, meaningful routines. He especially loved starting the day with a fresh cup of morning coffee and the daily newspaper in hand. Those quiet mornings were among his favorite moments. Above all, he treasured spending time with his devoted wife of 72 years, Mildred, whose love and partnership were the greatest blessings of his life. Together they built a home filled with faith, laughter, and enduring commitment — a true example of lifelong love. Family was the greatest joy of Ted’s life.

He was the steady foundation of a large and loving family, and was known as Daddy, Papa, and Big Papa. He believed deeply in taking care of one another and passing down values that would last long after he was gone. Ted is survived by his wife Mildred, daughters Vicki (Mark), Becky (David), a son Woody (Rita) along with 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, extended relatives, and friends who were blessed by his love. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and a great grandson Jet Talbot.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that Ted has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” His life was a true example of how faith, hard work, and love can turn humble beginnings into a beautiful legacy that will live on for generations. The family is especially grateful for the care and kindness of the staff at English Meadows and Cresent Hospice during his illness.
