William John Retter

William John Retter, affectionately known as John, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, at the age of 79 in Granger, IN. Born on November 17, 1945, in South Bend, IN, John led a life marked by a love for knowledge, a passion for the natural world, and a dedication to those he held dear.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marie (Hartley) Retter and John S. Retter, and is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Ina (Shin) Retter. Their union in February 1973 in Osceola, IN, blossomed into a lifetime of shared adventures and enduring love. The legacy of their devotion continues through their children, William "Rob" Retter of Mishawaka, IN and Jennifer (Geoff) Silver of Fishers, IN, as well as their treasured grandchildren, Henry, Anna, Teddy, Eliza, Lorelei, Jack, and Robbie.
John graduated from Penn High School and Purdue University. He worked at Solvay Enzyme Bayer in Elkhart, IN and I/N Tek in New Carlisle.
John's was an avid reader, he loved gardening and traveling. The companionship of his dogs added a layer of warmth to his days. John's life was a beacon of kindness and wisdom, illuminating the lives of those around him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A visitation for John will be held from 11:00am – 12:00pm Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN. A private family prayer will immediately follow visitation.
