Gary L. Goddard

Gary L. Goddard, a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and cherished member of the South Bend community, passed away peacefully in Mishawaka, Indiana, on February 8, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on April 10, 1950, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Melvin and Barbara (Doseman) Goddard, Gary's life was a testament to the love and dedication he had for his family and the community he held dear.
A proud graduate of Penn High School's class of 1969, Gary set the foundation for a life of hard work and service. His professional journey spanned several decades, during which he committed over 10 years as a talented union carpenter. His skills and dedication to excellence led him into a role as a building inspector for the City of South Bend, where he devoted another 12 years before taking a well-earned retirement.
Gary's spirit and enthusiasm were most evident in the things he loved. Whether it was standing behind home plate as an umpire or just soaking up the atmosphere around the baseball park, Gary's passion for the game was unmistakable. His love extended beyond the diamond, as fishing provided him both solace and adventure. He loved the tranquility and excitement that came with each catch and cherished the moments spent by the water. Gary especially enjoyed all the dogs he had throughout his life, and they truly became companions.
Beyond his hobbies, at the core of Gary's world was his family. He took the greatest pride in his role as a father to Megan Goddard, Erin (Dustin) Coffman, Heather (James) Miller, and Michael (Brooke) Goddard. His 11 loving grandchildren were the apples of his eye, and he relished in his time spent with them, always ready with a story or a word of wisdom. Gary's love extended to his siblings, Caroll, Janet, Marcia, Nancy, Pam, Ed, Terry, Jimmy, and Kevin, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. He was preceded in death by his brothers Rick, Steve, Al, and Phil; and his son Matthew Kostelec.
An avid conversationalist, Gary loved talking politics and was known for engaging in lively discussions, always with respect and sharp wit. His voice and perspective will be greatly missed at family gatherings and among his many friends.

At this time per Gary's wishes there will be no services. Palmer Funeral Home – Bubb Chapel is honored to be assisting the family with final arrangements.
