George Harold Leis, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away surrounded by his loving family on February 11, 2026, in
South Bend, Indiana. He was born to the late Harold and Ida (Paul) Leis on November 15, 1942, in
Tacoma, Washington, and embarked on a life filled with love, laughter, and a passion for education and science.
After graduating from Franklin Pierce High School in 1960, George enlisted into the United States Air Force. While stationed in Illinois he met his future wife, Sharon (Ware) Leis. George was then transferred to England. While he was on leave from the Air Force, Sharon and George decided they would get married once Sharon finished her last year of college. She flew to England upon graduation to marry George in Ipswich, England, on June 22, 1966, marking the beginning of a devoted and enduring partnership. They would have celebrated 60 years together this year. Together they raised a beautiful family of four wonderful sons Steven (Brenda) Leis, Jonathan Leis, Jason (Rene) Leis, and Jeremy Leis, as well as their beloved daughter, Suzanne (Jason) Gill. George was preceded in death by his siblings Robert and Frank Leis.
George's intellectual curiosity and dedication to his country led him to pursue further education, receiving both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Illinois. With a brilliant mind geared for innovation, he worked as an aeronautical engineer at Boeing before discovering his true calling in education. For 38 years, he shaped young minds as a Physics teacher at Elkhart Central High School. His legacy in education extended beyond the classroom as he founded an aeronautical engineering class and made history as the first girls' soccer coach for Elkhart Central, helping start the program.
George's vibrant character brought joy to everyday moments. Whether it was gardening, coaching, leading Cub Scouts, or monitoring the weather with a scientific eye, he approached all his interests with enthusiasm and keen wit. He had a unique talent for engaging everyone he met, often sharing playful banter with waitstaff at restaurants, and always ready with a clever comeback. A loyal fan of Weird Al Yankovic, George's sense of humor was ever-present.
Most importantly, George's heart was always with his family. He was a towering figure in the lives of his adoring grandchildren Keely, Carys (Evan), Brandon (Cesia), Avery, Jackson (Andrea), Elijah, Nicholas, and Trinity, and his great-grandchildren Sawyer, Charlotte, Joshua, Luna, and Noah. He reveled in their accomplishments and took great joy in exploring science toys and projects with them, instilling a sense of wonder and curiosity.
George Harold Leis will be remembered as a remarkable man who led a life rich in love, learning, and laughter. His wit, wisdom, and warmth have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. Though he has taken his leave, the legacy of his spirited life will continue to inspire his family for generations to come.
