William Riley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Homes and Crematory - Washington St. on Jan. 9, 2026.
William Lee Riley, affectionately known as "Dr. Bill," passed away peacefully at his home on January 8, 2026. Born on July 8, 1944, Bill was a devoted husband to Linda (Best) Riley. Their marriage spanned 57 years and their love was steadfast, enduring, supportive, and rich. He was a proud father to Shannon Clark and Zachary (Karmen) Riley. He cherished his role as "Pop pop" to his three beloved grandchildren: Alistair Clark, Hannah Clark, and Danniella Riley. He was equally proud to be "Uncle Bill" to his nephews Aaron (Diana) Smith, Ryan (Jennifer) Smith, Timothy Best, and his niece Jennifer Best. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Woodrow Riley and Betty Jean (Neptune) Riley, and his sister, Connie Jean Smith. He grew up in Hartsville, Indiana, and graduated from Hauser High School, remaining deeply proud of his roots and family heritage. A lifelong advocate for education, Bill dedicated his career to ensuring every child had the opportunity to learn. He served Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) in numerous roles, including Associate Superintendent for Finance and Transportation, and worked as a budget fiscal analyst for the Indiana Department of Education under two state superintendents. His commitment to education was matched by his academic achievements, earning Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees from Indiana University, where he remained a loyal alum. Bill honorably served his country in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army. He was active in many organizations throughout his life, including the Indiana Association of School Business Officials (IASBO), Camon Masonic Lodge No. 343, American Legion, Bartholomew County Retired Teacher's Association, Columbus Regional Hospital Auxiliary Board, and Taylorsville United Methodist Church, among others. In recent years, he found joy in volunteering at the Columbus Regional Hospital gift shop. Known for his warm personality and ability to connect with anyone, Bill never met a stranger. He believed in the equal value of every individual within an organization and made it a point to know everyone by name-from bus drivers to administrators. His unwavering focus was always on doing what was right for children. Respected by many and loved by more, Bill's legacy of kindness, dedication, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. The funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Kathy Dickman officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. There will be a Masonic Service held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery in section 80. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the German Township Volunteer Fire Department.
