William R. "Bill" Rogers, born June 27, 1931, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Arlene, and now joins her in a glorious heavenly reunion just days after what would have been their 65th wedding anniversary.
Born in
Pelzer, South Carolina, to Ruth and Shuman Rogers, Bill was one of ten children. He fondly shared stories of his upbringing in Pelzer, where he worked at the Community Café, helped publish the first Pelzer Log, and was voted Most Dependable by his classmates.
After high school, Bill entered the United States Navy and honorably served at a helicopter airfield in Pensacola, Florida. He deeply valued his time in the Navy and carried with him a lifelong belief in service to his country.
Following his military service, Bill attended Furman University, where he served as president of Tau Kappa Epsilon and cherished the brotherhood of his fraternity. He formed lifelong friendships at Furman and remained closely connected to many while living in Greenville and worshiping at church together. Bill was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church and attended the RN Ward Sunday School Class where he was a founding member.
Bill demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout his professional career, retiring as Executive Director of Human Services at Steel Heddle Manufacturing. He served as President of the Greenville Area Personnel Association (GAPA) and was appointed Chairman of the Civil Service Commission by Governor Carroll Campbell, where he helped guide hiring practices for the Greenville County Police Department.
Beyond his career, Bill had a passion for antiques and became an avid collector. His knowledge led him to consult with others seeking expertise in collectibles and ultimately to build a successful estate sales business.
Bill was a loving father, uncle, and brother and husband. He was a very supportive parent who was present at every ball game and dance recital for his children, Andy and Jane. He served as both PTA President and Booster Club President at Greenville High School and was well known by so many of the students who he treated as his own.
Bill is survived by his son, Andy Rogers (Andrea) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and his daughter, Jane Rogers Mills (Ellis) of
Greenville, South Carolina. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren who were the light of his life: Harrison Rogers and Hannah Rogers of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Wyatt Mills (Maddie), Whitner Mills, and Jackson Mills of
Greenville, South Carolina. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Bennett and Molly Mills, who lovingly called him "Great Papa." Family meant everything to Bill.
Bill will be remembered as loyal, kind, and deeply caring - a man who modeled a servant's heart. His life was guided by his favorite Scripture:
"What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." - Micah 6:8
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Cascades Verdae Community and to his angel on earth, Ms. Teri, whose care and compassion brought comfort and support to both Bill and his family. Special thanks go out to Joanie, Uniqua, Austin, and the many CNAs who loved and cared for Bill in his final years.
