William J. Rybak, Jr., affectionately known by all as Bill or Wild Bill, passed away on May 22, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on December 7, 1949, in Chicago, IL, Bill's life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to service, his love for his family, and his enduring passion for life's many joys.
Bill's legacy is deeply rooted in the Tri-State Fire Protection District, where he served with distinction for over 26 years. As a dedicated Division Chief, he not only fulfilled his duties with excellence but also became a mentor to countless firefighters. Even after his retirement in 2009, he remained an integral part of the fire service community, continuing to engage with the District and its personnel until his final days.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill's love for baseball was unparalleled. He played on Inner City Leagues and Suburban Leagues, starting out in the city and proudly winning a championship. His enthusiasm for the sport stayed strong throughout his life, participating in over 40, over 50, and over 60 leagues. A lifelong Cubs fan, Bill's passion for the game was infectious, and his spirit on the field was as indomitable as it was in every aspect of his life.
Bill's love story with his wife, Kathy, was one for the ages. Together for 37 years and married for 25, their bond was a beacon of love and dedication. Bill's affection for Kathy resonated in every facet of his life, and their partnership was a source of strength and joy.
Known for his remarkable sense of humor, Bill was the heart and soul of any gathering. His ability to lighten up the room and ensure there was never a quiet moment made him a cherished presence at any table. As an amazing conversationalist, Bill's passion for his wife, the fire service, friends, automobiles, and all of life's pleasures shone through in every story he shared.
Bill's interests were as eclectic as they were passionate. From his younger days drag racing to the times he spent riding his Harley, he embraced adventure and excitement. He was a man who loved to help people, whether it was through his work, his infectious laughter, or simply by being a wonderful friend. His iconic presence in the lives of those who knew him was underscored by his selfless nature and friendly demeanor.
An avid outdoorsman, Bill relished the time spent shooting guns and enjoying the company of his many beloved dogs. Each of these pursuits was more than a hobby; they were extensions of his passionate spirit and love for life.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Rybak, his step-son, Michael William, and a host of dear friends who will miss his larger-than-life personality. He was a man who made an indelible impact on the world around him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
