WILLIAM S. “BILL” BUTE, 82, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at Accura Healthcare in Cherokee, Iowa.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Boothby Funeral Home-Greenwood-Schubert Chapel located at 216 S. 2nd Street in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Mark Leeds will officiate. Visitation with the family present will take place an hour prior to services on Saturday, April 4th, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Military rites will be performed by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 and the Cherokee American Legion. Online condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com.
Bill was born on November 30, 1943 to Earl and Earlene (Edler) Bute at Huron, South Dakota. He enlisted in the United States Navy on December 28, 1961 and served until May 17, 1966. He was united in marriage on December 5, 1975 to Roxanne Sholly, together they had three children, Rhonda, Brenda, and Terry.
Bill worked as an over the road trucker driving all across the United States. He also worked at an onion plant in Oregon.
In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, camping, sitting by the river, and cheering on his favorite Baatz Racing Team at the figure 8 races. He also patiently waited for his wife to walk down every aisle at the store when he would take her shopping.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Roxanne in 2022, two grandchildren Skyler Carey and River Wallinga, mother-in-law and father-in-law Ilene and Vincent Sholly, sister Sharon (Les) Clausen, brother-in-law Mike Sholly, sister-in-law Lori Sholly, great nephew Robert Schlote.
Bill will be lovingly remembered by his three children, Rhonda Bute of Elk Point, South Dakota, Brenda Bute of Cherokee, and Terry Bute of Cherokee; grandchildren Taylor Bute of Cherokee, Kyle Carey of Aurelia, Tristin Booher of Cherokee, Kaylyne Booher of Cherokee, Gracie Tuttle of Sioux City, Landon Todd of Washta, and Khendyl Bute of Cherokee; three great grandchildren Carter and Connor Baatz and Cohen Wallinga; sister Kay (Terry) Gagatko of Cherokee; brothers-in-law Ed (Max) Sholly of Osage, Iowa and Louie Sholly of Sedalia, Missouri; sisters-in-law Donna Sholly of Osage, Iowa and Deb Tyler of Elizabeth, Louisiana.
