William Simpson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greene Funeral Home - Downtown Chapel on Jan. 21, 2026.
William Robinson Simpson III, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, peacefully passed away on January 18, 2026, at Encompass of Rock Hill.

Born on November 11, 1935, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, he was the son of the late W.R. Simpson Jr. and Elizabeth Truesdale Simpson.

William is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Laura; his daughter, Lauran Pettit (Brian); and his grandson, Josh Pettit (Sarina).

A lifelong resident of Rock Hill, Bill graduated from Rock Hill High School in 1954, where he proudly contributed to the school's 1953 State Championship football team. He then attended Duke University, where, through the "Grace of God," he graduated in 1958. At Duke, he served as a manager for the football team, being named head manager during his senior year. Under his stewardship, the team achieved notable success, participating in two Orange Bowls in 1954 and 1958.

Following his time at Duke, Bill returned to Rock Hill and began a distinguished career in education. He taught and coached at Finley Road School for five years before becoming principal at Ebenezer Avenue School. He later served as principal at Lesslie #1 and Lesslie #2 for 16 years, followed by two years at Sylvia Circle Elementary. Bill continued to teach and coach students at The Catawba School, now Westminster Catawba School. After 12 years he returned to Rock Hill School District and taught for long term periods. Ultimately, dedicating a total of 44 years to education.

An avid outdoorsman and conservationist, Bill was passionate about preserving the natural beauty of the Catawba River and the surrounding lands, ensuring they remained untouched for future generations to enjoy. His love for the outdoors extended to his cherished tractor, which he often playfully referred to as his favorite pastime. A devoted railroad enthusiast, Bill found joy in model railroading and was one of the few who reveled in the moments spent waiting at a train crossing.
