William “Bill” Smith, age 77, passed away peacefully in comfort on March 9th in Matthews, NC, embraced by his family.
Bill lived a life guided by love. To those who knew him, his greatest strength was the quiet, steady way he cared for others. His love was gentle, genuine, and constant. Bill’s higher power was his family, and his religion was love. He was bright, curious, and constantly tinkering with some kind of machine. He taught his family to love science, think deeply, and show up when it mattered. Throughout his life, Bill overcame many health challenges. He met each one with humor, dignity, and grace. Even in difficult moments, he remained focused on loving the people closest to him and appreciating the time they shared together.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Mary Smith, and his beloved older brothers, Henry and Robert. He is deeply loved by his wife of 54 years, Deborah, who was his high school sweetheart and the love of his life. He is also survived by his two daughters, Shannon Marie Hale (spouse Dan) and Erin Smith Wright (spouse Marshall), who love him completely and will carry on his lessons of patience, acceptance, and home repair. Bill has taken great joy being “Papa” to his adoring grandchildren, Allie and Wolf Wright, who have filled his life with laughter and pride. Bill also loved his fellowship with friends old and new, in Men's Breakfast Club, and with his buddies in online games. To his loved ones, Bill was a steady presence, a source of warmth, and a reminder that steadfast love is the most important legacy anyone can have.
A celebration of life will be held on March 14th at MorningStar Presbyterian Church in Matthews at 1:00PM, NC. Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate Bill’s life and the love he shared so freely. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to honor Bill do so by supporting his favorite independent journalism source, NPR.
