William Eugene “Poppy” Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away peacefully on March 15th at 84 years old.

Bill was born on March 3rd, 1942 in Tampa, FL to Mary Esther Maus and Eugene Jefferson Smith. He graduated from Kathleen High School in 1960 and attended the University of South Florida before entering the Navy.

Bill had a long and successful service in the Navy, accruing 12 medals and 18 ribbons over his 20 years of service. He specialized in nuclear sciences and assisted in building various nuclear submarine missiles, including UGM 27-Polaris and Trident. He retired in 1982 as a SCPO.

On June 21st 1965, Bill married his high school sweetheart Barbara Jo Rupe. Together, they raised three children, Floyd Eugene Smith, Jody Lee Smith and Stefny Kaye Smit. After 30 years of raising children, Bill and Barbara moved to East Tennessee in 1986 to be near their family and built a house together. They enjoyed over 40 years in their home, during which Bill worked in maintenance for the Dandridge golf course. In his retirement, Bill enjoyed golfing and football, volunteering with American Legion Post 104 Honor Guard, building in his workshop, and being a comfy lap for his cat, Tigger.

William was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Mary Elizabeth Smith, his wife, and his daughter. He is survived by his sister Martha, his son Floyd, his daughter-in-law Maria Michele Smith, his grandchildren Elizabeth Efflandt and Mary Smith, and his great-grandchildren Violet, Ivy, and Olivia.

“Poppy” was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, amongst many other labels. He was known for his dry humor and gruff exterior while simultaneously being a kind, loving, and considerate example of a man.

A private celebration of life ceremony will be held in Bill’s honor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks instead for donations to be made to The American Legion Post 104, Sevierville, TN.
