William Adams Smothers

William Adams Smothers of Ashburn, Virginia returned to his Heavenly Father on January 5, 2026 at the age of 78. Bill was the beloved husband of Cheryl Graves Smothers for 53 years.

Born in Jefferson County Kentucky, he was the son of the late Robert Cecil and Wanda Adams Smothers. In addition to his wife, Bill is also survived by his special friends, Beverly and Emmett Jones, Jr., Jim Smothers, and many cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Brooks Bell, his step-brother, William Bell, and cousin Tom Shaw.*

Bill graduated from Shepherdsville High School in 1965 and continued his education at the University of Kentucky, graduating in 1969 with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Bill had a distinguished career with for the Naval Sea Systems Command spanning thirty-three years. At his retirement, he was serving as the Program Manager for Combat Systems Engineering for Carriers, Amphibs and Auxiliaries in the Program Executive Office for the Integrated Warfare Systems at the Naval Sea Systems Command in the Department of the Navy.

Bill was honored to become a Kentucky Colonel on May 31, 1995.

Throughout his life, Bill was a faithful member of Davidson Memorial United Methodist Church, Lincolnia United Methodist Church and Capital Church.
