William Strayhorn Obituary

William "Bill" Strayhorn
October 8, 2022
Durham, North Carolina - William "Bill" Strayhorn, 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at his home in Durham. He was born in Durham, the son of the late William Currie Strayhorn and Margaret Turner Jackson Strayhorn. In addition to his parents, Mr. Strayhorn was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances Brewer Strayhorn; and brother, Earl Strayhorn.
Mr. Strayhorn was a devoted husband of 58 years, a loving and supportive father, and the best Pa-Pa any grandchild or great grandchild could ask for. He was a great uncle to many much-loved nieces and nephews who all adored their "Uncle Bill". All who knew Bill liked him and found him to be a fun loving, dependable, loyal and kind-hearted friend, who loved a good joke and driving his John Deere tractor. He lived for spending time with his family and loved going on trips and vacations with them. Everyone who knew Bill, knew all about his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren that he was so proud of. There are no words to express how much this sweet, loving, kind generous man did for our family and how much he meant to us. We will forever cherish all the memories we hold dear to our hearts.
Mr. Strayhorn was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army Special Forces 82nd Airborne Division. He loved reminiscing about his Army days and loved sharing humorous tales of those times.
Mr. Strayhorn attended Durham High School and retired from the N.C. State Dept. of Transportation after many years of service as an inspector.
Mr. Strayhorn loved his church family, both his former community at Northgate Presbyterian Church, and his current one at New Hope Presbyterian Church of Chapel Hill.
Mr. Strayhorn is survived by his daughters, Brenda Strayhorn, and Janet Allen (Steve); son, William Thomas Strayhorn; grandchildren, Landon Allen (Brandi), Laurel Hall (Chase); great-grandchildren, Ryder Hall, Sawyer Allen, Lane Hall; and soon to be newest arrival, William Parker Allen.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 12th at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, Oc-tober 13th at New Hope Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kerri Mock Hefner officiating. Burial will follow the services in the church cemetery.
The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. in Durham. Online condolences can be made at www.clementsfuneralservice.com.
