William Joseph "Bill" Strehl, 78, of Highlands, New Jersey, and winter resident of Interlachen, FL, passed unexpectedly and peacefully at HCA Florida Putnam Hospital on Sunday, December 1, 2024. A native of New York City, New York, Bill moved to Middletown, NJ where he lived for 50 years before purchasing his winter home away from home in Interlachen for the past 4 years. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy. After his Navy service, Bill worked in New York as a color controller with Technicolor Films. He later owned and operated Home Doctor Home Improvements in Middletown, New Jersey, having great skill as a Black Seal Steamfitter and carpenter. Bill's greatest passion, outside of his wife and family, was fishing. He took pride in teaching his sons and grandchildren how to fish. He spent as much time on the water as he could, but also enjoyed hanging around Leonardo Marina (NJ) most days telling all his fishing stories and imparting all his great fishing wisdom on anyone that would listen. And if you listened, Bill would give you great advice to catch the big one. He was a member of most area fishing clubs and organizations, always willing to lend a hand. Bill also enjoyed gardening, tinkering with small projects, and building and repairing computers.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William, and Stella Strehl.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Valerie Strehl of Highlands, NJ, 3 sons; Joseph (Jennifer) of Highlands, NJ, Dustin (Maggie) of Highlands, NJ, and William of Port Monmouth, NJ; a sister, Diane Vaness of Verona, NY and 9 grandchildren, Rachel, Billy, Emma, Jonathan, Justin, Alexa, Kayla, R.J., and Damian. Bill was fondly known as Pop-Pop, adored his grandchildren and had a cherished relationship with each one.
A memorial celebration of Bill's life will be held at a later date in New Jersey.
Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Bill's Book of Memories page at www.johnsonoverturffunerals.com.
