It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our beloved father, William James Tomes, on February 13, 2026. William was born in Louisa, Virginia, on April 20, 1960, to the late Robert James Tomes and Doris Dean Tomes. A dedicated, loving, and funny soul, William spent a significant part of his life in his native town, contributing to its growth and development.
William was a laborer by trade, having worked at Pembroke Pettit until his health no longer permitted him to continue. Despite his health challenges, he remained a supportive figure, always finding ways to bring laughter to those around him. As Aldous Huxley once stated, "The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age," and that was indeed William. He carried his humor and love for life into his later years, leaving us with beautiful memories that will forever be treasured.
William is survived by his mother, Doris Dean Tomes, his daughter Melissa Stiles (Robert Stiles), his son William James Stanley, his brothers Tony Tomes (Rita Tomes), Michael Tomes, Richard Tomes, and sister Fatima Tomes, along with his grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, and other family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Tomes.
His life and legacy will forever be remembered by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
In William's memory, we encourage all who knew him to share their stories, memories, and photographs on the memorial page. These shared memories will serve as a testament to the love and joy William brought into our lives. As we remember William, let us carry forward his spirit of dedication, humor, and love for life.
