William James Waffle, known to friends as Bill, passed away on August 27, 2023, at the age of 83 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Born on October 18, 1939, in Owosso, Michigan, Bill was the son of Ross Wadsworth Waffle and Catherine Gelineau Waffle. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sisters Ruth Jeanne Ketscher and Joanne Ritter, and his brothers Robert Waffle and Ross Edward Waffle.
Bill grew up in Owosso and attended Owosso High School before graduating from the University of Michigan in the School of Architecture. He worked for many major architectural firms, contributing on numerous large-scale projects. His career took him around the country and abroad working on projects in a variety of capacities.
Although Bill experienced challenges in his life, he was able to maintain a loving spirit and optimism that was contagious. He made the best of the situations he found himself in and wherever he was, he seemed to make good friends. He enjoyed life and was a connoisseur of many things.
An urban dweller, Bill enjoyed a life of culture in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, the major cities he called home. He loved opera and going to the symphony, and followed baseball and football closely (his teams were University of Michigan, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Phillies). He read multiple newspapers everyday and kept up with a wide range of friendships.
Bill is survived by his sister, Madeline Waffle Barnes and his step-children Adam and Jennifer Norris. He also leaves behind the legacy of love from his nieces and nephews. He has been a wonderful and thoughtful uncle and supporter and we have benefited greatly by his presence in our lives. The family is grateful to Bill's guardian Jeffrey Heidkamp for his attention to Bill's well-being over the past ten years.
Bill was a man of faith and was active in his church Old St. Joseph's Church in Philadelphia. He will be interred at Trinity Cemetery and Mausoleum in upper Manhattan, next to the love of his life Paul E. H. Norris.
A Zoom Memorial Service will be held to honor Bill's life. More information can be found here: https://everloved.com/life-of/william-waffle/
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Old Saint Joseph's Church in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Orchestra or the Metropolitan Opera in Bill's memory.
